So I just used handbrake to convert MKV files of Casino Royale (31GB) and Skyfall (31GB), using the exact same settings:
MP4, HQ 1030p Surround (Modified), Web Optimised, Cropping Auto, Framerate same as source, Variable Framerate, Encoder Preset: Slow, Constant Quality - 20, Tune: Film
This resulted in both files being 5GB in size. However, I've checked several hours later and the Casino Royale mp4 is 14.1GB now, and Skyfall is still at 5.31GB. I'm not sure what is now causing the disparity?
I'm using Handbrake Version 1.4.2 (2021100300) and MacOS Big Sur 11.5.2 (20G95). Let me know if there's anything else that might help identify the issue!
Outputed mp4 file has randomly tripled in size?
Re: Outputed mp4 file has randomly tripled in size?
Different content will produce different output sizes with quality based encoding. Depends on detail, grain, motion, film length, etc. Does not depend on input file size.
Re: Outputed mp4 file has randomly tripled in size?
Appreciate the response! The almost 3x file size disparity between the two just seemed big considering they are both within a minute of being the same running length and are similar type films. Perhaps this is normal.
Re: Outputed mp4 file has randomly tripled in size?
Try The Social Network vs Saving Private Ryan; will be about 25x difference in output size despite 1.4x difference in length.
