Handbrake MP4s and Adobe Premiere Pro issues

Post by Esch »

Description of problem or question:
I used Handbrake to rip MP4s from two DVD box sets that I own. There is NO problem with the exported files as they play/sound great and VLC plays them just fine. My problem is I cannot import any of these files into Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 to edit them.

The first attempt I saved them out as H264/AVC with AAC audio and when I import them into Premiere, the program just out right crashes back to desktop every single time. Unfortunately this set of files was ripped a year ago and I no longer have the log file for it (although frankly I'm not sure if it will help since as I said the files play just fine in VLC.)

I decided to try another approach and used a totally different box set and ripped a test episode as H265/HEVC with MP3 audio. This time when I try to import I get a "This file has no audio or video streams" error. I did a search and tried all the tricks, install Quicktime, change file extension to MOV, etc, but nothing works.

I am aware that maybe I'm trying to import something too "new" codec wise that Premiere can't handle, however, I've imported many other MP4s with H264/5 without any issues. Below is the log file for the test file I made above with the H265 codec. Hopefully it's just a setting I'm screwing up somewhere. Any help is GREATLY appreciated. Thank you!

Try AAC audio instead of MP3.

1) Upgrade to the current release

2) Use the Production Standard preset

That's what's intended for editing use and is known to play well with Premiere and other common NLEs.

What is the current release? Inside the program when I went to the about section and checked for new updates there, it tells me there are no new updates.

Unfortunately with windows 7 I can only go up to 1.3.3, so downloaded that. I'll fully update whenever I get around to updating the OS on my box.

I'll also try the AAC thing that you mentioned and get back with you.

Oh they're in 1.3.1 as well, so I'll play around with them in a little bit.

So question about the files I've already created. It will suck if I have to go back and re-rip every single one again just so I have the ability to edit them. Would converting those files to some other file format fix the problem or?

You should rerip them to minimize multiple generations of quality loss, especially starting with something as limited as a DVD. But you could just encode from what you have. Your choice.

Ok I just tried the Production Standard preset, but it's only ripping audio. I tried it twice fiddling with it. Any ideas?

Sorry, correction... it's ripping both audio video and plays in VLC fine, but Premiere is only importing the audio from it.

When you don't know what you're doing, don't modify presets.

Then tell me why that would matter in this case? I need help, not ridicule from Rodeo.

See? That's the kind of guidance I need, thank you. So it looks like my version of Premiere is old enough where it doesn't play nice with H265 videos. I was not aware of that till now. Thank you for the tip Rollin_Eng. I will redo it in 264 and see what happens.

Yes that fixed it, thanks again. Question: I tried finding documentation on the "Production Standard" and the other three options in that section but couldn't find it. I would like to learn what all four versions do, so if you know where to point me I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks Mduell. I was searching through the help section from within the program and missed this one.
