HDR & 10 bits

Post by Bob8K »

Hi,

Anybody knows when the regular version will support HDR and work internally in 10 bits?

At the moment, if I'm not mistaken, only the nightly builds do.

The devs don’t usually set timeframes, it usually happens when it happens.

But just use the nightly, if it doesn’t work post a bug report.

why HB still dosnt support nvenc 10Bit ?? ist 2021. FFMPEG easaly can do this with: ffmpeg -hwaccel nvdec -hwaccel_device 0 -vsync 0 -i "input.mkv" -map 0 -c copy -c:v:0 hevc_nvenc -profile:v main10 -pix_fmt p010le -cq 26 -qmin 1 -qmax 51 -gpu 0 "out.mkv"

As rollin_eng said, the nightly builds support 10 bits. I don't like much beta testing, but so far, it seems to work well.

About HDR10, a suggestion for the devs: it would be nice to be able to set the mastering display luminance values, although I confess having no idea if it's possible or not, and how much work it requires.

I'm recoding the Snyder's version of Justice League to get a 16:9 image instead of the ridiculous 4:3 one (who in hell can think about making a 4:3 UHD image?), and these values are not the same as in the original UHD BR, too high for my display.

You can override the hdr10 metadata in the x265 additional options textfield. Currently x265 is the only encoder that writes those values to the video stream.

You mean the 'Advanced Options' field?
What would be the syntax? Does not that imply altering the gamma too?
I don't know how these values are handled by the display.

Something like max-cll=4000,1000:master-display=G(13250,34500)B(7500,3000)R(34000,16000)WP(15635,16450)L(10000000,1)

Gamma is an approximation of the transfer function of SD and HD video, HDR uses a different transfer function that can't be approximated with a simple quadratic function. Anyway, will it change the way the image is displayed? Probably.
