Dear HandBrake team,
first of all thanks for the fantastic application! It already served me well for quite some years.
Actually I don't have a real problem, but I'm trying to get the most out of my encodings. I always have the impression, that there is still some room left in image quality, without increasing the file size drastically. I tend to use HandBrake to re-encode TV recordings (DVB-S2, x264, 720p). Most of the time I don't stick to the presets, but adjust settings to my likings, which includes:
* container format: mkv
* cropping of black borders
* sticking to 1280 horizontal pixels or scaling to 960
* x264 or x265 (software encoders)
* RF 24-27
* speed: medium
* tune: film
* profile: high
I've already seen foreign encodings with 1280 horizontal pixels at file sizes between 700 and 900 MB that offered very crisp images. And I always felt, that I don't quite get the same quality out of my encodings. So I've been experimenting with settings lately. This included constant quality vs. average bitrate (kbps). I know the official recommendation to stick to RF settings:

In my experiments I encoded a 2,5 h movie at RF 28 and bitrate 1000. Both came out at 1,6 GB. Both encodings had their own advantages and disadvantages:
* scenes / frames with low complexity (dark cloudy night sky) looked considerably more blocky with RF settings than constant bitrate
* scenes / frames with with quick movements and may details were looking more detailed with RF settings.
Is there a way to get the advantages of both? I had something in mind like setting a minimum bitrate while everything else is adjusted through RF. I also wouldn't hesitate to use some advanced textual settings.
I'd appreciate any recommendations.

Oh sorry. I assumed you need a kind of a stack trace, found in the logs, after crashes or similar.

Setting vbv-bufsize and vbv-maxrate to the same value will effectively raise the minimum bitrate, which is what you are hinting at. However, you will have to experiment in RF mode, because it is a little unpredictable with different sources. See here for examples.

I've been experimenting with vbv-bufsize and vbv-maxrate and RF, e.g.:
Trying to limit the lower bitrate to 1000 kbps. But actually this has rather the opposite effect, of what I'm looking for. Just like vbv-maxrate says, it limits the maximum bitrate. The actual file size of the output was reduced for a given RF value (by setting a minimum quality the filesize should increase or at least stay the same). This is in conformity with what I found doing some additional search:

I would imagine you would want to use vbv constraints in combination with a lower RF.
The lower RF should increase your quality across the board and the vbv settings should reduce quality at the high end.

It is difficult to state easily, and for that reason I had taken the unusual step of reporting my own comments for removal.
I think understanding the concept of wagging the dog is best gained by looking at the images in the link I posted.
It's also helpful to know that "maxrate" means "maximum + bitrate" and "effectively" means "indirectly" in this usage.
I am always reminded to tread likely when it comes to explaining indirect use of settings, and this is not the first time I have sounded ambiguous trying to do so. Thanks for taking it easy on me.

Knowing that a minimum bandwidth can't be targeted is very helpful. That explains why I couldn't find any thing in this direction when doing an internet search.
Now I understand your intention. Specifying a high RF and then limiting the highest bandwidth peaks.It's called an "indirect" bandwidth control.
You can only learn if you give it a try. In the beginning you never fully understand things ;)Since you don't understand the concept yet, I advise against using any extra encoding parameters, but sticking to the presets.

More specifically, Lowering the bufsize to Match the maxrate Reduces the lookahead time.Specifying a high RF and then limiting the highest bandwidth peaks.
The Images in my Link illustrate the Effects on the Maximum, Average, and Minimum bitrates.
As shown, I cannot adequately explain those effects verbally, so please refer to those graphic examples for your guidance.
If you want to experiment with how this works, I had hinted that maybe you would want to start with ABR instead of RF, to reduce untrapped variables.

The problem you will run into is that with an RF encode you won’t know your bitrate is so what do you set your vbv to?
If you really need a specific size/bitrate go with 2 pass ABR. Trying to force the quality encoder to do odd things might work occasionally but it’s probably not the best idea.

I’m not sure that would even work, it’s description says “It prevents x264 from reducing the ratefactor (aka "quality") below the given value even when doing so would violate VBV constraints.”
If I set my CRF to 27 and my CRF-max to 20 wouldn’t that just give me a CRF 20 encode? Any vbv settings would only effect maximum bitrates right?

Correct, but you would use it differently e.g. main RF of 20, crf-max of, say, 28: where VBV would cause the RF to drop below 28 for a given segment, CRF-max ensures it retains some quality (busting VBV restrictions as necessary). qpmax can be used for a similar (but more aggressive) effect. That makes more sense, however you are not just raising low bitrates you are raising EVERYTHING to RF 20.
You also still have the issue of not knowing your bitrate so what do you set your VBV to?
It would seem to constrain you in a min max RF but your bitrate could be anything as your content could vary.

Looks like I used it for Aliens and Jurassic Park (1080p, H.264 High Profile, level 4.0 -> VBV 31250/25000), RF 20 with a crf-max of 25.5…
My BD discs of Aliens (and to a slightly lesser extent, the first JP movie) have a lot of very fine grain, I noticed in a previous encode that VBV was very active on that source (I had an old RF 19 encode come out at an average of well over 20 Mbps -- given the level 4.0 maxrate, it was practically CBR).
So last time I re-did my library, I decided that instead of raising level to 4.1 I would try crf-max on those two, letting VBV mostly do its thing but making sure it never goes below RF 25.5 because of it.
Given how long these encodes take (x264 veryslow on a quad-core MacBook Pro), I just did the encodes, so I don't have any with/without comparison. I think I may have tried a test chapter of Aliens but those experiments and are long gone now.
Other than "the movies looked fine", I don't really have more insights into what difference it would have made without it.
