10bit or 8bit encoding?

Post by linuxuser »

When looking at the example below I see:
Bit depth : 10 bits

Does it make sense to encode with hevc-10bit?

Waht happens when the display does not support 10bit native?

My tvs are 8bit or 8bit+2bitFRC. Mobile phones are 8bit probably too.

Yes if you can tolerate the speed.

The speed is not the problem, but maybe the size. While crf025 was ok with 8bit, it was below 4GiB, but it looks like with 10bit it will be over 5GiB, so FAT32 cannot be used anymore with a USB-stick. Don't know if it makes sense to use crt26 with 10bit instead of 8bit with crf 25.

You should really use something other than FAT32 in 2021 ;-)

As you are talking about encoding 4K content you are going to hit that 4GiB limit more often.

Is exFAT an option?

Not me, the implementation of exFAT is buggy sometimes. Don't know if this is a linux problem or a problem of some mobile phones.

If you are stuck with a 4 GiB limit, you might want to switch to ABR encoding to keep the size fixed below your limit.

Are the recommended crf values für UHD HEVC 10bit. I remember there is crf=20 for dvd, lower values are most times useless. With HD-resolution I remember that crf-values are higher, when lower gets useless.

So is there a crf-value with UHD HEVC 10bit, where lower gets useless. I am happy with crf=25 with UHD HEVC 10bit, while I was happy with DVD and crf=22 or 23.

https://handbrake.fr/docs/en/1.3.0/work ... ality.html

Bit depth is hard to recommend for as sometimes size can go down instead of up.

Are there any 10bit 2k/HD Blu Rays in the wild?

It’s my understanding that 10 bit is not a part of the blu ray specification.

Indeed, any non-UHD Blu-ray is 8-bit 4:2:0.
