what to do about interlaced/telecined title?

Post by webzo2000 »

Description of problem or question:
Trying to convert MTS files to MP4. I am using Super HQ 1080p using v1.3.3
Handbrake is asking me to do something about the title being interlaced or telecined.

Not sure what I should be doing...? It does go through and completes transforming the source and the output plays fine...

Thanks for your time.

If you choose a preset with either "480" or "576" in its name, the proper settings will be selected on the Video page.

These presets are geared towards DVD sources, which are interlaced and are usually telecined.

But doesn't that decrease the quality or something? The original was shot on a camcorder in AVCHD format which is high quality, from what I understand and from reading the owner's manual of the camcorder, AVCHD and 1080p 60fps were the high quality options for recording...

My goal is to transform the MTS file to MP4 so that it is playable widely and not specific to Sony/Panasonic standard.

Appreciate your thoughts.

Thanks.

Handbrake is going to generate a progressive file either way; it does not generate interlaced files. How it does that with an interlaced source depends on the de-interlace settings.

If the camera is set to output progressive frames, the detection of interlacing may be false. The nice thing about free software is it doesn't cost anything to try it without deinterlace. Just select one of the 1080 or higher presets, which generally have deinterlace turned off (most 1080 sources aren't interlaced).
