Can Handbrake work with Interlaced files?

Post by finbo »

Description of problem or question:

I'm in the UK and broadcasters here still work with interlaced files for news, sport and docs, etc
I'm new to Handbrake and am looking at it as an alternative to Compressor.
But when I trying to compress 50i files, they always come out showing as Progressive despite using the 'same as source' video setting and/or the 'Pal 25' setting.

Am I doing something wrong or is it the case Handbrake doesn't work with 50i?

Is this why there are no 50i or 25p settings in any of the General presets - none of these are above 30, etc?

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):

1.3.3

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):

MacBook Pro - Mac OS Catalina 10.15.7

Handbrake can work with interlaced sources, attempting to remove the interlacing, with a few different methods available.

The output will be progressive, though. If you NEED interlaced output, you would need a different tool.

Thanks, that answers that then - I would still need interlaced output but a smaller file size.

Is there a reason Handbrake doesn't offer interlaced as an option?

Because all streaming is progressive, and no, you do not want interlaced output for any reason I know of. Davinci Resolve is free.

As I say at the top of my post, broadcasters in the UK still want interlaced output.

There are still many places around the world that also require this, but it is for broadcast tv and not streaming, so that's where the difference lies.

I hoped that would clear it up for you.

However, 99% of video shot and submitted for broadcast is Progressive. It has been this way for several years. The broadcaster merely flags it as interlaced; it is nothing you need to do yourself unless a particular outlet tells you specifically to do so.

Not so in many places...
