DVD Timed photo gallery

Post by ITgreybeard »

Description of problem or question:

Are there Handbrake settings to deal with DVD slide shows / photo galleries?

DVD titles that are essentially photo galleries with audio and timed progression through the slides are encoded as zero length (time), without audio, and with rapidfire showing of all photos in a second or two. It would be much preferred to encode these with the audio and at the same rate of progression as built into the DVD title.

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):

Put into the queue and encode a DVD title that is little more than a slideshow.

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):

1.3.3 (2020061300), though this has been a longstanding issue (for me) in every version of Handbrake that I have employed.

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):

Windows 10 Pro (with latest updates): Version 2004 (OS Build 19041.450)

Try ripping with something else, like MakeMKV. HB reads this title as being very short.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will give it a go. I have used MakeMKV for some while now, but only to rip Blu-Rays.

Ok. Results:

0. Just to recap, this set of titles has been ripped from DVD to internal storage VIDEO_TS folder, and all efforts proceed from this origin.

Effort 1: MakeMKV did not consider the galleries to be titles, at least not with my present settings. So no .mkv files were generated for the galleries.

Effort 2: Isolated gallery title(s) with DVD Shrink, but MakeMKV "failed to open disc" and Handbrake treated them as ~1 second titles as in the original post.

Effort 3: Used VLC to convert gallery title to .mp4 but a 1 second file was produced.

Effort 4. Success! Used MPC-HC (or VLC) to play the gallery title and captured in real-time the inner window contents with Total Recorder, which has proved useful to me for many a year. Total Recorder produced the requested .avi, which then was run through Handbrake for trimming and production of an .mp4.

That pathfinding seemed rather tortuous, though the eventual solution was reasonably straightforward. Nonetheless it would have been much more convenient for Handbrake to have been able to handle.

Occasionally such galleries are part of the menu and would not be recognized by HandBrake at all.

Hello everybody,

Just one question. It's been 3 and a half years of this thread. Is it possible now, with version 1.7.2, to handle DVD titles built as photo galleries?
Thank you!

Those things are a nightmare. Whether they're timed or not, galleries are difficult.
They seem to be (often anyway) encoded as video somewhere in the mass of VOB files on the DVD. If you can get a copy
of these files (like from a ripped source) you may eventually be able to find the stills in the right VOB file, and then you can
use something like VLC to walk thru the video frame by frame to extract them.

The same things happen with audio files - I have found some DVDs of older movies have preserved radio interviews or shows as videos with not much video content rather than as separate audio files.

The controls on VLC often don't work right to step thru these galleries - whatever emulation VLC is providing for typical dvd player remote control isn't adequate for this task - so often direct recovery this hard way is required.
