Why is the default File Extension "M4V" for MP4 video?

Post by WarthogARJ »

Hi,
I'm new to the Forum, and somerwhat new to Handbrake.
Nice software: thank you.

A couple of questions, please.
I'll ask here before I suggest them as new features/bugs.

(1) Why does the default choice in Fast 1080p for MP4 use "m4v" instead of keeping it as "mp4"?

Yes, I know I CAN change it, and I do.
And I think I can modify it by editing the Preset.
But why did the develioper choose that option for it in the first place?

I have two more, I'll ask separately.

Thanks,
Alan

For historically reasons. iTunes required it for ac3 and subtitles. There is as preferences to set it, but we should change the default back to "mp4" in the next version of HandBrake.

iTunes isn't the only extension-sensitive application out there. I used to have a DLNA server that would not serve files with the MP4 extension, requiring M4V. And I had a DLNA client that wouldn't see the files if they were M4V. Got rid of both, but still use M4V because I have a lot of them, and both the Synology media server and my Samsung TVs are happy with it.

iTunes doesn't require M4V anymore.

Early support for chapter marks only existed in M4V. Now not needed.

Now that the way to set the default is settled and whether or not there is a NEED for "m4v", there is an advantage to it. Searching a drive for "*.m?v" finds both MKV and MP4 files, if you're using m4v as your extension.

I say we bypass all this nonsense and make your own extensions: hbavi, hb4v, hbkv and hbbm :D

I say we have no file extensions and use resource forks. :D
