Output wants to add pixels to width of input file.

Description of problem or question:
First use of Handbrake, I drag drop my 720x586 .avi file and output says 768x576
This appears to be a default response to what was just added as a file, I also see this in [Removed Dubious Product Reference] converter.
This is larger than SD then which is 720 and I was to place this into a 720 wide 'window' in a HD size frame in video editor to force flat screen TV to play it at its intended physical size as then it looks fantastic. (If only flat screens had such an option rather than stretch it massive bigger than intended original viewing size.
Why does handbrake add pixels to my SD width, losing its proportions ?
I als saw crop saying 2 2 2 2 eyt why should I want it to crop my video ?
I simply want to get rid of the toothcomb effect on what was filmed on a Hi8 camcorder and stills from it have the comb teeth.
I dont want to spoil the 720x576 sized SD footage and gain size in one direction, which will alter its shape, circles might cease to be circles etc.

What is handbrake doing, and what settings should I be using ?

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):

drag drop any sd footage 720x576 into handbrake !

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):

1.2.2

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):

windows 7 64bit pro

Your very much not general question would need an activity log to tell us what's going on in your specific situation.

Hi,
doesnt say how to get the log into the post I made though.
I have no choice other than to paste it into the actual thread window itself, as there also is on edit post option for my post.

Having dabbled with the settings trying to resolve it, its now offering me 720 x 534 and i cant get it up to its former offer of 768 width, it wont go above 720 now, dont understand why it cant just offer me same px w x h as source.

here is the log:-

Code: Select all

[21:17:15] + Crop and Scale (width=720:height=534:crop-top=2:crop-bottom=8:crop-left=2:crop-right=2)
[21:17:15] + source: 720 * 576, crop (2/8/2/2): 716 * 566, scale: 720 * 534
[21:17:15] + Output geometry
[21:17:15] + storage dimensions: 720 x 534
[21:17:15] + pixel aspect ratio: 63724 : 63675
[21:17:15] + display dimensions: 720 x 534
Rather strange Pixel Aspect Ratio, but... Your video actually only has 534 lines of resolution, after were probably "guard bands" are removed. If retaining them is important to you, you can disable auto-crop, and set all crop values to zero, which will retain the black bars.

You should probably turn interlace detect off, and let all frames be deinterlaced. Depending on the results, I might change the deinterlace method to "BoB", but that's my preference.
