Extra Options - Codes

Post by Gulielmi2002 »

Description of problem or question:
In the video tab there is a box called "extra options". Is there a list of codes somewhere that contains all the codes and how to use them? I am like this: I have a place that I can input some kind of codes/commands to instruct handbrake to do, but cannot utilize it because I do not know the codes/commands, their meaning, and/or how to use them making the extra options unavailable to me. I would like to be able to use it if and when I need to or want to.

Extra options is where you can enter ENCODER-SPECIFIC option commands. The usable options are different for x264, x265, and other encoders.

If you do not know what specific options are, and more importantly, what they do, you are better off ignoring this box.

I would prefer knowledge over ignorance. I am not going to mess with the box until I understand it; that's a given. I would like to learn so I can have a resource available to me when and if needed/wanted.

The question still remains: is there a resource available so that I can learn what the options are and what they do?

Well, which video encoder will you be using?

I don't know enough to form more of a meaningful question than I already have. I am just trying to get my feet wet. I have looked and looked for a starting place, but like a I said my lack of knowledge is preventing me from forming more concise questions in order to gain more knowledge.

A good question would be what would be a good starting point to both research about "extra options" and to start using "extra options"

What are you trying to do, first of all? Video at 1080p or lower works well with x264, and the various presets for specific hardware have tweaks needed by that hardware.

Doing 4K? x265 may be a better option, if your playback environment supports it, and there are presets for that encoder that target specific playback environments, too.

Do you know your playback environment well enough to know what its limitations are? Do you have specific reasons to think that the presets that cover that PE are incorrect?

And don't go tweaking because some YT person did a video on how they made their very specific video "perfect" for YT, because YT and most other video hosts re-encode whatever you upload to them. Most YT videos about handbrake deal with versions that are up to a decade old, and rarely are what they're trying to encode similar to what you want to encode, unless you're into 4K 60+fps gaming video.

Then you really don't need to be thinking about extra options.

Encoder, then preset, then tune, then quality, then a lot of experience, then extra options.

I am trying to learn. From what I have seen, there isn't much or any reference material online about the topic.

If this is your answer, don't waste everyone's time. I understand that you don't know; that's fine. I am looking for reference material so I can learn. If you don't agree, then by all means feel free and don't post.

I am not looking for catch 22 type answers: If you don't know, don't have experience, and/or can't give a specific example, then don't bother with it.

From my point of view, I have a tool at my disposal. I would like to be able to utilize that tool to its fullest. I think this is simple enough reason.

I already posted the documentation for all the options for the most popular encoder. Based on your reply it sounds like you haven't bothered to read it.

If the object is strictly "to learn", rather than "accomplish a task", then handbrake isn't the place to start. There is SO much going on "under the hood" that you will lose a lot of time just figuring out how one thing affected the other things that depend on it, which you don't have direct control over.

http://www.videolan.org/developers/x264.html is where to start such an adventure. You will have access to every control in the encoder, and not have to worry about such things as a filter hiding your test results.

The assumption around here is that people are trying to do something. Learning about how each switch/control in a program affects the output requires the ability to change one thing at a time, or your learning gets lost in figuring out interactions. Take a short section of video, and encode it multiple times, changing one thing at a time and seeing what happens. Or doesn't, if your change made a bad interaction with something else.
