Subtitles are not on DVD MP4 files.

Post by Ken429 »

Description of problem or question:
I am using Handbrake 1.3.1 and for some reason the subtitles are not included in the MP4 file when I encode a DVD unlocked using DVDFab 10.07.0. I have tried using DVDFabs "Full Disk" and "Main Movie" and neither works. I do not have this issue with BluRay disks. I did not have this issue until recently when I updated Handbrake from 1.?? to 1.3.0 and then 1.3.1.

Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):

No problem, I have seven different DVD's with the same issue.

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):
1.3.1

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):

Windows 10 1909 with all the latest and greatest updates.

Re: Subtitles are not on DVD MP4 files.

Post by Ken429 »

Went back and installed an old version of Handbrake (1.2.1) and the Subtitles are still missing in the MP4 file. So...it must be something DVDFab has changed that Handbrake is not handling correctly or...I'm missing something? The Subtitles are OK on a copy of a DVD made with the latest version of DVDFab.

The subtitles were passed through to the output file. What are you trying to play it with?

The MP4 standard does not allow graphic subtitles. There is an unofficial extension to allow VOBSUB, but it is not implemented by all players, especially the players found in "smart tvs".

You don't have the issue with BD subtitles because handbrake will force those to be burned in. If your player doesn't support the VOBSUB extension, you'll have to burn the DVD subtitles in, too.

I manually force the English Subtitles to be burned in on all MP4 files I create from DVD's and BluRay's. Meaning I delete the Foreign Subtitles and Add the English Subtitles. I'm playing the MP4 files using Plex Media Server and or Windows Media Player. Neither shows the Subtitles on MP4 files created from a DVD. It does not make any difference whether I play the MP4 file on a TV or on a computer. Up until recently I did not have a problem with Subtitles not being burned in from DVD's. Something has changed in the last couple of weeks! I'm using the same hardware that I've been using for years.

But...If I play the MP4 files using the VLC Player and manually select Subtitles English is available! Now I'm totally confused. So like the Disc below the Subtitles are in the MP4 files they just don't automatically show in Plex or Windows Media Player or VLC Player like they used to.

Like I said above, the DVD copy (Physical Disc) of the movies I create using DVDFab have the Subtitles available if I select them - which is normal for all discs.

What the #$%% am I doing wrong all of a sudden?

In this case, what you're doing wrong is you didn't select burn in for the subs

And you have a playback environment that doesn't support the sub format you provided in the container you selected.

You're correct! I did not Check Burn in after I deleted the Foreign Scan and Added English. So... my problems started when I updated Handbrake.

The Burn In for the English Subtitles must have "stuck" until I updated.

Which get me to my next issue - how can I tell Handbrake to always use the English Subtitles so that I do not have to manually delete the Foreign Subtitles and Add the English every time I make an MP4 file?

Pick English as your own language in the subtitle defaults and save it in a preset.

I'm slow but getting smarter, I hope. Anyway, I have been using the Preset "HQ 1080P 30 Surround" for many years creating MP4 files from movies on DVDs and Blurays. Every time I would override the Subtitles by deleting Foreign Subtitle and selecting the "Add First" option which gave me English. I now understand the program gets a different video format for Blurays that apparently Plex and Windows Media Player can handle without specifically selecting "Burn-in". Since 99% of the stuff I create MP4 files for in recent years is from a Bluray I was surprised to find that of DVDs were different. Thanks all, I now understand a little better what was going on.

Per your suggestion I have under the Subtitles Tab used "Configure Automatic Subtitle Selections" as follows:
Track Selection Behaviour: First Matching Selected Language
Selected Languages: English
Options: Unchecked both boxes
Burn-in Behaviour: First Track

I then saved as a Custom Preset using "Ken429".
I then selected the Custom Preset "Ken429" and set it as the Default.

Seems to work! One more question: Since I originally selected the "HQ 1080P 30 Surround" Preset before overriding the Subtitles did all the other stuff in that Preset stick when I added the new Custom Preset? It looks like if does. Also, it appears Handbrake overrides some of the Video stuff depending on whether it's a DVD or Bluray?

Yes, if you saved after starting from that preset, it has the rest of the settings from that preset.

I think I'm happy. Everything makes sense. The inconsistency that got me going on Subtitles was Handbrake defaults to checking the "Burn-in" box when you Add the First Subtitle on a BluRay but defaults to NOT checking the "Burn-In" box for DVD's when you add the First Subtitle! Oh well, I'm sure there is a good reason? Thanks again for the help.

You cannot put Blu-ray subtitles in an MP4 container at all, burn-in is mandatory. DVD subtitles can go in MP4, just almost nothing supports playback of DVD subtitles in MP4 anyway.
