HandBrake 1.3.0 comment Thread
Re: HandBrake 1.3.0 comment Thread
Please note that various news sites have misquoted our release notes, indicating HandBrake 1.3.0 can encode AV1 video. In reality, we added AV1 decoding via libdav1d in HandBrake 1.3.0. HandBrake can now open AV1 encoded sources, but cannot encode AV1.

Re: HandBrake 1.3.0 comment Thread
Release notes state "support for Ultra HD Blu-ray discs", however I didn't see anything relating to the pipeline. I presume that Handbrake is still an 8-bit pipeline without the ability to properly handle UHD HDR content? Thank you for the continued development efforts!
Re: HandBrake 1.3.0 comment Thread
Ultra HD means 2160p 4K, and is not the same as HDR, though both are often coupled. HandBrake supports UHD Blu-ray via libbluray but does not currently support HDR, and the pipeline is still 8-bit YPbPr 4:2:0 in the 1.3.0 release.
You're welcome!

Also it doesn't actually support the disks, just rips of them.
Re: HandBrake 1.3.0 comment Thread
You can use optical discs directly if the content is not copy protected. Even so, we recommend using an appropriate tool to copy the content to your storage drive before feeding to HandBrake, as the process is more reliable.
Re: HandBrake 1.3.0 comment Thread
Given that all the recent releases have needed a prompt x.x.1 release to deal with release issues, is it time to transition to release-early-release-often instead of the big bang annual releases with issues year after year?
Re: HandBrake 1.3.0 comment Thread
I'd like to release more often, but it's wholly dependent on developer time. We're a small team. In the past we have aimed to put out a patch release within a few weeks following a major release to fix obvious issues. We have no definite timeline but plan to do the same as time permits.
Re: HandBrake 1.3.0 comment Thread
Release often doesn't stop the need for patching. For the most part, there have been a relatively small number of issues raised so far.
With the small team, it can take, sometimes months, for a piece of work to be done across all 3 GUI's. The new queue design was a few months for example and that was just down to waiting until developers had time to actually implement it.
Probably in a few weeks, we'll try push out a rollup of some fixes to get rid of some of the annoyances.
