DVD to Quicktime movie conversion?

Post by hairfarmer »

I have homemade dvd's of family vacations etc, that I would like to rip and save as quicktime movies, (.mpg 0r .mov) and upload to my ftp server to share with other family members.

I use MactheRipper to rip my dvd's. But how do I use Handbrake to save as a .mpg or .mov file. What would be the best format for cross-platform compatiblity? When the finished movie is played, I would like it to play in the browser window using a quicktime plug-in without being forced to download it to desktop.

Can this be done with Handbrake?

HandBrake definitely does not support ripping to MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 formats.

It also does not yet support creating content in a QuickTime .mov container, although that is actively being worked on (with mixed success in the early alphas).

You should try mpeg streamclip for this.

I guess I could just save it as an AVI file. Quicktime can play AVI those files as well now that I think about it.

VisualHub is another good general converter program. I'm currently favoring it, myself.
