Ryzen 9 3900x X264 not maxing out all cores

Description of problem or question:

I recently upgraded to a Ryzen 9 3900x and I noticed that 3 of my cores are not being fully maximized. All but 3 of my cores are pegged at 4.+ Ghz while 3 are jumping around 3 - 3.6Ghz. I'm just wondering if this was normal. I know that Handbrake is using the ffmpeg library. I was wondering if it was a limitation of the library. I would like to try just use ffmpeg to do the encoding from the command line. Is there an easy why to get the settings that Handbrake is using? I was hoping to just look at a logfile or something and just cut and paste the settings to ffmpeg, but I don't think that will be the case from looking at the detail logs.

ffmpeg, potentially. The different encoders potentially. There are many factors that affect core count scaling. (Including decode, source content resolution, settings used, filters used etc. It's complicated is the best answer.)

Also, HandBrake doesn't use ffmpeg.exe. We have our own engine which utilises libavcodec/format (from ffmpeg team), x264, x265 and a dozen or so other libraries. (thus, to answer your question, we don't generated any CLI queries).


Finally, based on your settings, I'd be inclined to drop the Decomb / Interlace Detection by turning those off. You'll get a small speed boost doing and I highly doubt you'll need those on for that source.

It's not really ffmpeg, it's mostly x264 and somewhat HB.

I was actually considering building a new computer using one of the recently released Ryzen chips as they seem to have amazing power for the price. I was wondering how performance would be with software encoding with x265? Would this be more likely to max out all 12 cores? What about x265 with a 4K video and the NLMeans denoiser? I would expect that encoding these files would max out even the about to be released Ryzen 3950x with 16 cores - am I correct?

Cannot find ANY info in the benchmark forum (or on the whole Board for that matter) on the new Ryzen 9 processors and their ability to do x265 encoding. Earlier generations of Ryzen processors had somewhat disappointing x265 results which was why I was asking. Original poster had questioned why the x264 encoding had not maxed out his twelve cores and I was just wondering if it would be any different for x265. Also curious about any speculation of how the soon to be released Ryzen 3950x might be useful for 4k video when using the NLMeans denoiser. Those encodes typically take several days on my present Xeon mobile processor so I'm looking to upgrade! Just trying to get some info from an actual Handbrake user on the suitability for x265 encoding of the new Ryzen 9 processors before I pull the trigger on a new machine.

NLMeans is typically memory bound, so fast RAM and memory bus is paramount. Luckily, the latest and greatest is usually coupled to new CPUs.

What operating system would one want to use if they were building a box solely to use as a Handbrake encoder. Are Unix versions typically more efficient at utilizing all available cores and memory to the fullest or does WIN 10 have advantages in compatibility?

Still would like to hear from zorin 1 as to how the x265 encoding with Handbrake compares to x264 and if it saturates all the 12 cores :shock: Waiting to pull the trigger on a new motherboard and processor to make a Handbrake workstation and would like some feedback from someone who already has one of the new processors as to x265 performance. From what I can gather, these new Ryzen 9 processors give the most bang for the buck in heavily multi-threaded apps like Handbrake. Pretty anxious to see what 16 cores / 32 threads could do to decrease my x265 4K with NLMeans encodes! :D

I'd maybe hold off until the 16-core comes out until we cans see some reviews for it. While it will depend on your settings/source resolution etc, I would expect that reasonable settings (with few/no filters) should scale to 16 cores fine assuming a bottleneck doesn't show up.

It doesn't look like Intel is going to have a great answer to Zen 2 for a while yet so 12/16 is where I would be heading myself if I didn't currently have an 8700K

The 16 core Ryzen 3950x is due to be released in September :D ! Intel does not seem to have an answer, at least for the present. I've even heard rumors online of Zen 2 Threadripper processors being released soon if I decided to really go all out, but of course that would be REALLY expensive :shock: ! A 16 core desktop processor would be a huge upgrade from the Xenon mobile processor I presently use and would seem to offer the most "bang for the buck". I have a whole NAS drive full of Blu-ray and 4K movies I need to encode to portable versions for trips with my iPad Pro. I already was planning to wait until September for the 3950x but was trying to get some feedback on the Board from anyone who already has a Ryzen 9 processor up and running.

Then if we could just get Handbrake updated to utilize real 4K 10 bit HDR files I'd really have something to stress out the new workstation :oops: !

You can always run more than one encode at a time, this will soon use up any spare CPU you have.

I wish that I had some comparisons for you, but I'm only doing x264 encoding since I watching stuff on my plex server by the use of a Ruko box. And it only does playback for x264. I only own one UHD movie, but that for just so that I could try out my new Blu-ray player and see if I could rip it. I can tell you that I was encoding Endgame at about 42 FPS. I really like the fact that I can encoding this fast. What I have noticed is if I put a noise filter on that my fps really drops. I do this when I encode old movies.

I'm still looking for the best settings that will give me the best image and the smallest file size. Really hard to come up with the right balance and I'm still learning.

I don't think you will go wrong with the Ryzen 9 3900x. I glad that I bought. The performance that I got was well worth it. Sorry that I can't give you any information on the x265

Can you explain a little more about when to turn off Decomb? It sounded like from what I read that it has to do with the old TV broadcast when it was doing interlacing. I'm guessing that interlacing is no longer be done on blu-ray or dvds. I have not had time to look at the settings yet, but I guess there is a way to turn it off, I just left is at is default since I don't know what the setting fully does.

To be fair, iterlacing is a convoluted subject.

For example, by the spec *all* DVDs are interlaced. But most movies on DVD are encoded with soft telecine which is 100% reversible. So you can easily retrieve the original progressive frames (which HandBrake does for soft telecined content). Some BDs are soft telecined, but the BD spec also allows progressive encoding (whereas HD-DVD is "interlace only" like DVD).

As a rule of thumb, if HandBrake detects the framerate as 23.976 or 24fps, it's almost certainly progressive and the decomb filter is not needed.

In some rare cases I've seen mixed content DVD. I.e. some scenes that are film rate (progressive) and some scenes that are video rate (interlaced). Older SciFi that is a mix of live action and CGI sometimes got transfered to DVD this way. I've not yet seen a BD with mixed content.
