Variable Framerate?

I was just reading a site that had some suggestions for Handbrake settings, and it said never to use variable framerate. The problem I have is that I have done an absolute ton of transcoding with variable framerate selected (I think it was the default setting). I made sure to check the "same as source" box, though. Will that be sufficient protection from variable strangeness? I haven't had any problems yet, and I'd hate to have to redo everything, but I'd rather do that now than find out later I've ruined my entire library.

Variable Framerate was not well supported by some players 10 years ago. Nowadays usually it works on everything.

Great, thanks. I figured the "same as source" option would keep me safe. Glad I wasn't wrong.
