Apple Preset Difference - Only File Size?

Post by jjmccrae »

Description of problem or question:

Been using handbrake for years, but now wanting to get rid of a lot of physical DVDs as I'm moving house.

Been using Preset: Apple 1080p60 Surround for as long as I can remember.
Noticed the preset: Apple 2160p60 4K HEVC Surround

Converted DVD Jurassic Park with both but other than file size I cannot see a difference.

Apple 1080p60 Surround - File Size: 1.66GB

Apple 2160p60 4K HEVC Surround - File Size: 1.11GB

Am I missing something?

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0):

Version 1.2.2 (2019022300)

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, Windows 10 Creators Update):

macOS Mojave 10.14.5

"Apple 2160p60 4K HEVC Surround" uses HEVC (h.265) encoding, instead of h.264 encoding.

Not seeing a difference is a good outcome.

"Apple 2160p60 4K HEVC Surround" uses the HEVC (a.k.a. h.265) codec. It's a newer codec than what is used by "Apple 1080p60 Surround" which is h.264. Since it is newer, some playback devices and software will not support it. So you just need to be aware that the files you produce with this preset may not be as universally playable as with the older preset.
