Description of problem or question: Can Handbrake be used to compress audio only? If not, are there any alternatives that folks can recommend?

Handbrake is a video encoder - it will ALWAYS encode the video.
You can use ffmpeg to just compress audio while copying the video through unchanged. Google will find it for you. Their website shows examples of doing exactly what you're wanting.
