Video not clear and audio static

Description of problem or question:

I downloaded HandBrake, restarted my mac pro, and tried to transfer one of my DVD's to iTunes, but all I got was static and no video.


Steps to reproduce the problem (If Applicable):

What happens if you use a ripping tool, like MakeMKV, which understands how to remove region coding?

The third-party add-on that you're using to force handbrake to read encrypted DVDs is not all-powerful. That's the main reason using handbrake as a ripper is not supported.

Thanks for the response. Here is where my understanding of this software fails me. I thought Handbrake was suppose to "rip" my DVD's to MP4 format so that I can watch them on my mac or apple TV. So what you are saying is that I need to use a ripping tool and then use handbrake to transfer that to MP4?

Correct, HB is NOT a ripper, it is a video converter.

Handbrake uses a couple of libraries for decoding the structure of VOB and other DVD-related files. There is a separate library that can work with the libraries handbrake uses, that does the decryption and removes some other forms of copy protection.

But it is not 100% reliable, because it isn't maintained regularly. Applications like MakeMKV have updates every couple of months (sometimes more frequently) to deal with copy protection as it changes. And operating system updates quite often break the connection between handbrake and that library, so you can have it working just fine today, but a patch from Apple or Microsoft (or even an antivirus update!) can make it mysteriously stop working.

That's why it's not supported here - it generates a lot of support requests, and the handbrake developers have no control over why it breaks.

Other forms of copy protection should be handled by libdvdnav (assuming the DVD can play in an actual DVD player), because it's meant to implement a DVD "virtual machine" (i.e. navigate the DVD like an actual DVD player would), but there may be bugs, unimplemented features, as well as even possibly bugs in HandBrake's dvdnav wrapper which mean it won't always work.

Using dedicated software to remove copy protection is recommended.
