Does handbrake support HDR or not?

Post by mas5acre »

I've read conflicting things about HDR support.Does Handrake retain the 2020 colorspace of an HDR file?

If handrake takes an HDR10 video file, does it convert it to the 8bit color space?

HB converts to 8 bit between decode and encode.

That's what I thought. I also thought the colors would look wrong when converting from 10 bit to 8 bit, but they look fine. Has handbrake added support to convert the color spaces?

I throw 10 bit ProRes HDR10 and HLG HDR files at HB all the time...they spit out as 8 or 10 bit HEVC with the proper BT2020, PQ, HLG etc color space under codec info in VLC, upload to YouTube and flag HDR, and playback on my 4K TV triggering HDR mode. Bit depth is different from color space...you just get more shades in 10 bit, same color, just additional increments.

My camera files start out as 8 bit 4:2:0 HLG BT2020 XAVC-L (h264 100Mbps) from a Sony camcorder.
