Handbreak Automatic Cropping

I was wondering how the Handbreak automatic cropping feature determines the amount of space to crop on the top, bottom, left, and right sides of the video.

Handbrake chooses 10 (or more, if asked) frames in the video, and looks for what its rules say are letterbox bars. It then calculates the "average" amount it can cut off and not remove content.

It isn't perfect, but it works much of the time. And it can miss when movies insert subtitles and other such stuff in the letterbox.
