I just read this Macworld article https://www.macworld.com/article/316937 ... brake.html where the author says the 1080p and 720p presets are pointless and to just use 480 preset if you are ripping a DVD in NTSC format (US DVD). Unfortunately, he doesn't explain why?
Could anyone here elaborate on the reasons why? Thanks.
Are the 1080p and 720p presets really pointless?

NTSC DVDs are 480p to begin with.
Using the 720p or 1080p presets won't hurt though, there just won't be any advantage to using them when the source is 480p. But using the 1080p preset means you can use the same preset for both DVD and Blu-ray sources, so it might be more convenient.

Rodeo,
By convenient, do you mean not having to toggle back and forth between presets if you are ripping a set of DVD and Blu-ray DVDs?
I know this a rookie question, but is every DVD 480p unless it has a Blu-ray logo or are there some cases of DVDs sourced in 780p or 1080p without a Blu-ray logo?
Lastly, does ripping a 480p sourced DVD with 720p or 1080p presets add size to the file?

A CD and a DVD have the exact same size and shape, yet most people wouldn't confuse a CD with a DVD. Same with DVD and Blu-ray, they're different. There is no such thing as a "Blu-ray DVD" or a "DVD with a Blu-ray logo".

Maybe 1% larger if you're unlucky.DigitalFreedom wrote: ↑Fri Apr 06, 2018 4:05 amLastly, does ripping a 480p sourced DVD with 720p or 1080p presets add size to the file?

Would there be any discernable increase in video quality in ripping a 480p sourced DVD with the HQ or Super HQ presets?

Depends mostly on you and your environment. Try both and watch clips (don't pixel peep stills).
