HadBrake: UHD H.265 settings for the best video quality

Post by FoxAdriano »

Hi, I have an UHD uncompressed file that I edited with Edius workgroup 9. It is an AVI (YUY2 without compression). It is an important file and I need to get the max image quality. I will watch it on a big Sony TV. I'd like to get a UHD H.265 file. Can you give me the precise settings for HandBrake please?
I thank you.

Your best bet is to download the nightly build and use one of the official presets. The Apple or Roku 4K presets are a good starting point.

I thank you but why do I have to download nightly build? I like to understand.

Because we added new built-in presets, and because we're shipping a new version of the x265 encoder with new encoding features and bugfixes :)

I'm sorry, I'm new here and I don't understand what "log" I have to post.
Anyway I post my latest "log". Can you modify it in order to obtain the best UHD image quality please?

This is the "log" of official HadBrake version but in the next time I will download the nightly version.
Thanks

Your log shows us which version of HB you are using as well as the properties of your source.

Ok, but why did you ask my "log" and you stopped lecturing it? Why are you so silent about my "log"?

1. Download and install the nightly build: https://handbrake.fr/nightly.php. You can have both the nightly and release builds on Windows.

2. Select the Chromecast 2160p60 4K HEVC Surround preset under Devices.

3. Start encoding.

That's it. You can adjust the RF (quality) up or down +2/-2 if you want less or more quality.

Thanks for your golden advice. Now I don't have any problem. Now my files flowing fluid. It is good but now I get another different problem: Exporting from Edius 9 timeline to XAVC S file I notice a better image quality. It is evident. Yet I used Chromecast 2160p60 4K HEVC and I increased +2 RF quality. I am happy but at the same time a bit sad.
I attach some links. The first one is the link of HandBrake settings. The other two links of about my test. In your opinion which video is better? Which of them has a better image quality? In my opinion the difference is evident and even if I don't write as they were made, you understand well which of the two is worse. ;)

+2 RF is lower quality, e.g. 22 is *better* than 24. Lower RF to increase quality.

Your files look good to me on a 4K IPS display. Some fine/small details are lost in the HEVC encode, but it isn't noticeable unless you're looking closely. If you are concerned about the quality, lower the RF slightly.

It's also important to note that the HandBrake encode is 89.5% smaller.

The file made with HB is around 71MB the second one is around 670MB. mmmm there is too much difference also about the heaviness of the file. They can't even compete as image quality.

Maybe try RF 17 ;)

Usually image will be transparent to the source well before that, but if you don't mind the extra disk space required… it should still be a fair bit smaller than the XAVC-S encode for all but the world's grainiest sources.

I made a file wit RF 16. Today every test is good even that made from Edius 9 timeline in XAVC S. In none of the files I notice jerky, all them are fluid. Anyway all the files have the same image quality. Now I explain my tests:
1) I create a uncompressed file then I made a file with TMPGenc 6 (x265 NVENC 150Mbps). The file is 693 MB.
2) I create another file with HandBrake RF 16. The file is 308 MB.
3) I create another file exporting to XAVC S directly form Edius 9 timeline (150Mbps). It is 668 MB.

I watched them as with Kodi as with MX Player Pro on my big Sony TV. Every file was perfect. Then I compared those files on my big PC monitor, even stopping the video in still image. All the files have the same definitions, chromatism, clours, etc. They aren't similar but equal. It can seem incredible.
I will in the following assess what I will do. For now I thank you.

EDIT: Only if I choose RF 5 I see a good image.
