What are the 10-bit/12-bit x265 options for?

Post by gradha »

Trying the nightly build I saw these new video encoder options, but I can't find any information about them. The documentation at https://handbrake.fr/docs/en/latest/tec ... odecs.html doesn't mention any bit difference. I found at viewtopic.php?f=6&t=37359 a recent comment that higher bit versions might only provide minor compression efficiency. However, I encoded a music video file with 8, 10 and 12 versions and got 115M, 119M and 123M for each version, suggesting that higher bit versions generate bigger files.

Comparing visually the files, I chose a cropped frame from 8bit vs 12bits which you can see at https://imgur.com/a/VkqR3. The 8bit version (top) is smoother while the 12bit version produces notable artifacts which are undesirable, so I'll keep for the moment to the 8bit version. However, what is the purpose of these alternative versions?

I think you use simple chip because 8 bits is work on that. So you need an advanced chip for 10+bits.It is working on all os.
