Need help with some files

Post by jaimehrubiks »

Hello. I have some VCDs from when I was a child and I need to convert them to h264.

Handbrake won´t detect my VCDs as a source, but it seems like the only file that matters is a .MPG file inside the file structure. It gives the typical no valid source or titles found.

This file is playable using VLC

This is the Log file of handbrake

I tried both in Windows and in OSX and the problem is the same. I tried using other DVD ripping software but it won´t work, they all say that the CD is damaged. But I have many CDs and all of them say the same. But I cant play all of them without issues with VLC.

It's been a while since I messed around with a VCD but from what I remember......
There's an old program (free), called VCDGear. Use this and select the DAT to MPG option to get your files off the VCD (MPEGAV folder). It also has option to fix/repair any problems if I remember correctly, it's been far too long.
When you have all your MPEG files, you can use them in HandBrake,

Most video CD's are mpeg-1. Ffmpeg will convert it to mpeg-2 so you can use it in Handbrake.

No need to convert to MPEG-2. I had to help a teacher friend of mine out a few months back with a few VCDs he bought to use with some of his privates'. Just used VCDGear, DAT to MPG, then made some MP4 files with HandBrake, worked a treat. ISOBuster and a few other programs will also correct the DAT files to MPEG-1.

Hey there.

My VCDs are already in MPEG. I mean, the file under MPEGAV folder is a .MPG file and it is not readable by handbrake.
Finally I ended up the built-int convert function of VLC, that worked pretty good, although I had to do it one by one.

I will note down VCDGear for the future though. Thanks for your replies.
