Quality of HEVC; libx265 vs QSV vs HM-16

Hi,

There are 3 popular encoders for HEVC, that I know of:
HEVC-model-16 (the reference encoder, used by scientists) -- how good is it ? (licensed under BSD?)
libx265 -- commonly used.
Intel QuickSync - how good is it ? How fast ?

x265 is highly configurable and faster than the HM.

QuickSync prioritizes fast over efficient.

I've never tried HM myself -- IIRC it's highly efficient (at least as far as metrics go) because it does many things quite exhaustively, but isn't it like a hundred times slower than most production-ready encoders?
