x265 Settings for Grainy Content

Post by Brimmstone »

I have started converting some of my content to x265 and noticed with some of the grainy content (older material that was originally shot on film) that the x265 encodes are actually larger than the x264 encodes. What settings do people normally use to combat this? Are there recommended denoise settings or tune settings?

Do you want to preserve it or smear it out?

NLMeans denoiser can help you either way. Use its Grain tune to preserve the grainy look but clean up the color channels, reducing file size. Or use the Film tune to reduce or remove the grain entirely.

Just to specify, that's the Film tune in the Filters / Denoise / NLMeans options, and not in the Video / x265 / Encoder Tunes.
