Issues with h265 and anamorphic scaling?

I was going to put this in bugs, but I haven't found a good way to reproduce it as not all of my files are affected.

Basically I have anamorphic scaling set to auto (I think that's the default?), but I've encountered a tiny number of files that won't encode properly as h265 with this enabled, forcing me to turn it off. With it turned on the resulting video tends to stutter a lot, and can also become distorted (blocky grey appear as if a key-frame wasn't decoded at all).

Are there any knowns issues with the h265 encoder and anamorphic scaling? My sources are usually 1080p exactly, so some kind of scaling is (I believe) required since the storage resolution will usually be 1920 x 1088.

On the related note of course; do I actually need anamorphic enabled at all? I haven't noticed any real difference between enabled/disabled except where this issue occurs, so would I be better just leaving it disabled? I've never really thought about it before, just left it enabled because I think it was enabled by default.

Usually when we see pixelation of that blocky-gray type, it's a performance problem where the machine simply cannot decode fast enough. It's possible that using anamorphic requires some minor scaling on playback that is just taxing enough to cause such issues with an already resource intensive decode.
