Why are my encode file sizes nearly the same using x264 and x265 encoders?

Post by Deleted User 41939 »

Hi, I have a few questions, but mostly related to the above subject.

But a warning, I'm a newbie to video encoding and usage of HandBrake..... so yeah, lol! I did search in the forums and read the documentation though.

My first question: Why is my file size slightly larger with x265 compared to x264? I selected the Fast 1080p30 preset, but also did a x265 video encode by only changing video encoder to x265 from that preset, and kept the other settings the same. Shouldn't the x265 encode produce at least equal, if not a lot smaller file size?

Secondly question: The x264 files had video thumbnail icons, while the x265 files only had generic video file thumbnail icons. How can I make x265 files produced by HandBrake show the video thumbnail icons?

Third question: I notice the x265 presets are only in MKV. Why are there no presets for x265 in MP4 containers? Is it because x265 encoded videos are better in MKV?

I've included the pastebin link below. Sorry, I don't know to embed the code in a framed preview window in my post; how does one do that?

Many thanks for your help in advance! :)

Can you post a single log of a x264 and x265 encode so we can see whats going on.

If you want x265 in mp4 just change the container to mp4.

Okay, I think I've isolated two encodes of the same file, one in x265 and the second in x264. Hope this is what you are looking for: https://pastebin.com/W3kt3tux

The RF is the same in both
change constant quality if use in h264 22 RF use in h265 24 RF is the same quality in my test
you can also set the encoder preset to slow

i'm a newb too... figure i will try to give you what i know.

1. not sure why but latest release only show about ~15% saving between x265 and x264 at rf20, i am still using older 0.10.3 cause i am getting ~55% smaller file size with x265 using fast preset.
2. depends on your hardware, my skylake will show thumbnails for x265 files
3. mp4/mkv is a container only, that is, you can put x265 inside mp4 container

x265 mostly shows file size savings at low bitrates. At high quality settings, the improvements over x264 are marginal.

Also, it's helpful to note that the rate factor (RF) values for x264 and x265 are similar but not equivalent. Don't expect the same number to produce the same result for both encoders.
