HandBrake doesn't work after update

Post by Lord Chaos »

For several months I used HandBrake to copy my DVDs to the hard drive for later viewing. Along about December of last year I got a notice that there was an update, so I got that. Despite using the instructions I'd read the first time around, I've not been able to transfer even DVDs that I had copied earlier.

I tired restoring an earlier version of HandBrake from a backup but that didn't work either. That tells me something is probably missing but I don't know what.

Below is the partial log, copied while a scan was under way. The process goes on forever, and can't be cancelled during the scan so I have to quit HandBrake. I've installed the DLL for decoding, and checked the box in Tools > Advanced. Have I overlooked something else that needs to be done?

Thank you.

Your third-party library to add DVD decryption is missing. You will need to find it and reinstall it, or learn to use a proper ripping to to get the video off the disk.

I really don't know where you get it any more. Direct ripping with handbrake is NOT supported here, for exactly this reason - there are too many things that can go wrong with it, that are not under the control of the handbrake developers. Mac users have had it stop working when they upgraded their operating system, and Windows users have had it stop working when their antivirus software was updated.

Tools designed for ripping, such as MakeMKV, also keep up with the multiple copy protection methods beyond "just" decrypting the data that the third party libraries provide.

If you can't handle yourself, you really should be ripping with something else like MakeMKV.
