Camcorder/AVCHD 1080i x264 encoding [SOLVED]

Post by duren »

Hi,

I'm trying to archive camcorder avc hd recordings, preserving interlace, but am having trouble. The resultant videos play faster in both MPC (Windows) and XBMC (OpenElec Live/NVidia/VDPAU), but in MPC shows half the time (14s vs 28s) and in XBMC I see 28s but it freezes half way through presumably because there are no more frames to play. MeGUI on the other hand, appears to produce a properly working result.

Is there a known issue with interlaced encoding in Handbrake?

Rodeo has posted instructions for forced interlacing; however this is not what Handbrake is designed to do. Deinterlacing is part of its normal function.
Nor is Handbrake an archive format for AVCHD. it is a playback format having entirely different architecture and compression than transport streams.

For archiving AVCHD, I strongly recommend AVCHD.
For a playback format from AVCHD, I strongly recommend Handbrake x264.

Some interesting findings:

1. When an audio track is included, video freezes half way through, because as mentioned it plays too fast.

2. When an audio track is excluded, the output video is the incorrect length of half the time of the input video.

3. When previewing, video is correct length but not as fluid as original, even though encoding is still set to ttf.

I think it's because my input source is 1080i60. Original is High@L4.0, Interlateced / TTF

Re: Camcorder/AVCHD 1080i x264 encoding

... you're using hardware decode, decomb, and trying to preserve the interlacing :? something with those combinations of settings seems off to me...
try disabling hardware decode, and for sure disable decomb if you want to preserve interlacing...
otherwise, i'm not sure of what else to suggest... other than either using passthru or FDK-AAC instead :P

There were some mistakes in my last encode due to a preset change.

- Decomb should have been off, was off on all previous encodes, tried again with it off, no difference.
- I was using FDK-AAC for all encodes prior to the last one, no difference.

Here is an updated log with decomb off and fdk aac used:

Re: Camcorder/AVCHD 1080i x264 encoding

Post by duren »

Damnit, it was the experimental hardware decoding. Once I turned that off, everything is fine.

I'm embarrassed, I don't even know when I turned it on, must have been the first HB version that introduced it.

Thanks to everyone who took a peek at this thread.
