DVD To MKV: Variable Frame Rate Setting Some Times Results In A File With A Constant Frame Rate

Post by Hand On Tha Brizzake »

On my system, HandBrake [latest nightly build at the time of each conversion] is used strictly to convert from DVDs to MKVs. One of the settings chosen as default is the variable frame rate radio button and the frame rate is always same as the source. It does not occur frequently but from time to time the output file has a constant frame rate. For example, below is the output of a scan of the 1997 DVD release [title 1 – full frame version] of the 1980 film Raging Bull. The frame rate was set to variable and the pop-up button was set to the default which is same as source.

It may be obvious that the auto-cropping setting and anamorphic settings are set to auto, loose with a modulus of 2 respectively but I am not sure if it is obvious that both detelecine and decomb filters are enabled and set to default. My questions are these: [a] why is the frame rate constant and why the strange frame rate of 26.064? I am not complaining but it baffles me. My guess is the detelecine filter did more work on this film than most others but I can be quite wrong. Education is always welcome here though I read and re-read the entire documentation. Thanks in advance for the understanding.

Sorry, MediaInfo has never been good about providing accurate framerate information from x264.
Encode logs are required for every support question here.

I accidentally deleted the log. When the matted version is finished I will investigate if the same result occurs. If so I will paste its log.

Why is the frame rate [or any data] from MediaInfo unreliable? Is there a more reliable like program for Mac OS? I used MediaInfo for Windows once upon a time thus I am using the same for Mac OS.

P.S. Tis was H.265 (x265) but I guess the same applies.

Mediainfo does not report what the framerate flags are set to. It only measures the distance from one frame to another for some sample of frames. So it is notoriously inaccurate and wrong much of the time.

Is there any like program for Mac OS that does report the set flags for frame rate and possibly any other data about which MediaInfo is inaccurate?? Other app store apps use the same MediaInfo library so they must be just as inaccurate.

I will ensure the log for the next supposedly constant frame rate output file is saved.
