elapsed times don't match up between identical vids

Post by eddified »

I have two copies of my video.

One is the DVD clone (TS_VIDEO folder).
The other is an h264/mp4 transcode made using handbrake of the entire TS_VIDEO

The total running length (according to VLC) is different by about 6 seconds. The video is approx 1.5 hrs. When I get to the same frame on both videos, the elapsed time is different. The longer video (the handbrake mp4) doesn't seem to have any extra blank video at the beginning. The elapsed time difference between the videos is different at various points in the movie. At one point the difference is 31 seconds. I didn't tweak any video encode settings, I just used the "high profile", with modifications to audio tracks and subtitles. (But the video encoding settings, I left unmodified; framerate was "same as source", "variable framerate".) In other words, it seems that the frame rate might be causing the discrepancy. Is this possible?

What's going on? Is this normal?

In the absence of logs (lol wtf??), I'll go with temporal disturbances in the space-time fabric.

I'll upload logs. I just suspected this was a known issue and wanted to confirm; I guess it's not.

Was it flagged for PAL playback?
What do you get with CFR?
Handbrake did not add any frames.

I used the defaults for "high profile". I live in the U.S. I have no clue if it was flagged for PAL (I never choose PAL when given the chance). Is PAL playback an option in VLC that you're talking about, or in handbrake?

What is CFR?

Oh, "CFR" = constant frame rate? I'll try it out.

Silly question- are you quite certain vlc and HB are both reading the same title?

Yes. There is only one title (the main one), the way I originally ripped the disc.

Tried the CFR option, but still all MP4's output from handbrake have identical timelines, which are slightly different than the one in the TS_VIDEO folder.

Hi !

Sorry for interrupting.
I had the same problem some time ago. I don't have any logs, and frankly, i can't even remember the file name. I just wanted eddified to know he is not the only one in the universe with this problem.

I don't have the problem now, it existed only with two or three files, so i didn't sweat about it too much.
Sorry for my bad english, i'm german.
