29.9 fps to 25fps or 23.9fps or?

Post by linuxuser »

My tv doesn't support 29.9fps so I have to convert it to a lower frame rate. Would be 23.9fps better than 25fps from a technical sight?

Back up. are your TV inputs digital or analog?
What country? What's your source frame rate?

Input is via USB or WLAN. It are handbrake-files. Normalle German PAL with 25fps is used. My Samsung TV doesn't want to play these 29.9fps files, while the LG TV does, so I have to reduce the frame rate and then it works. But I am unsure which would be the best rate from the sight of conversion.

That your problem is actually framerate is a bit unbelievable. Does the Samsung TV not support variable framerate? If so, try 29.9 as a constant framerate instead of variable framerate.

That's what I was going to suggest; CFR, Same as Source.

I have this problem with different files. Normally I use with framerate, "same as source with variable framerate". The source itself makes problems already, when played with the Samsung, not the LG TV. I can try to use a constant framerate, but could you please answer my question, if it is better to use 23.9 when reducing the framerate from 29.9?

It's better not to reduce frame rate if your problem is really variable framerate.

There's no good choice for reducing frame rate if your content is actually 29.9.

I don't believe the problem is variable framerate, because I have no problems with variable framerate, when it is a lower value. I simply think the firmware of the Samsung is stupid, because the TV is sold in the EU and there is normally no 29.9fps and they can't imagine, that I want to play my music DVD from Cuba. Samsung sells the same TV with different features (software) for Germany, Europe, a.s.o. and the firmware is very buggy or stupid, but that has not to be discussed here. So If I understand you right, there is no difference with 23.9 or 25fps? I fear there is no other way, except to find a better firmware. Since the same file is fine with the LG I see no reason to blame the file.

PAL iis 25fps.
If that's all your teevee accepts, then there's your answer.

Yes PAL is 25fps, but the Samsung TV works fine with lower framerates too, but not higher. With 29.9 fps there are a lot drop outs. Maybe Samsung doesn't support 29.9 progressive. Sometimes I think the cpu in the TV is too weak.
