Haswell Quick Sync update
Well, most Intel chips today (even the small Atom Z37xx) provide Quick Sync, but the technology changed over years, and Haswell brought more speed/quality.
Gen 1 (Sandy Bridge), Gen 2 (Ivy Bridge): Three target usages (hard-coded quality/performance levels)
Gen 3 (Haswell): Seven target usages (hard-coded quality/performance levels)
My question is: does Handbrake, at máx quality (Quick Sync) setting uses (also) Haswell´s highest-quality TU1 setting? (which is to be higher quality than Ivy Bridge's)

It uses TU2, but you can request TU1 via advanced options: https://trac.handbrake.fr/wiki/QuickSyncOptions

Last time I checked TU1 doesn't offer much bar slower encoding. There is a reason we onlu show 3 presets rather than all 7, and it's not the legacy of the older chips not using all the tu levels.

I did not test the TU1 but I plan to. Haswell brought not so much speed, but AFAIK the bet was on quality, always considering we´re talking about a simple h264 profile that is far away from a good (and extremely slow) software encode. AFAIK the best profile on Haswell (TU1?) would have better quality than the best profile on previous tech. Nevertheless: I tested some Blu-Ray backups (I always make a MKV backup from my DVD/Blu-Ray, as I like to have an HDD + XBMC with covers and so on) with other apps and with Handbrake (max quality (TU2 on Haswell?)) and:
1) Quick Sync encodes >50-60 fps (i5 U4200 1.6Ghz) vs 2-3x slower x264 (software) superfast preset
2) Quick Sync allows <10% CPU, vs. >90% CPU on x264 SW (with Quick Sync I can even play some games while it encodes...)
3) Quick Sync backup is EXTREMELY good on decent bitrates/sizes, even on 1080p CR-RF 25-29.
4) I made some small tests on Handbrake, Quick Sync vs. x264 superfast/fast present and on a Samsung UE46F6500 at 2-2.5m away, I see no diference, even on fast moving scenes.
Does Quick Sync substitutes a pure x264 software slow present? Of course not. But unless you have a very fast CPU >3.5 GHz i5 (similar or better) that encodes on software almost as fast as Quick Sync, and you have a very big TV, then Quick Sync is an excelent option.

In settings, i can only change beetween "Best Speed" and "Balanced". Is ther no option for quality ?

On Ivy Bridge: Target Usage 1,2,3,4 are the same. 5,6 are the same, and 7 is on it's own. So you basically have 3 levels.
Haswell has distinct options for each TU level, but going from level 4 to 3 for example yields a very marginal difference. So it's still our view that it's best to offer both ends of the spectrum with something in the middle. (i.e the 3 presets you see in HandBrake today) As I say though, TU1 on Haswell is marginal compared to TU2 unless they've since changed things again. Users can still force it's usage, but it's not providing anything other than a placebo effect.
@jokum -> Same link applies to you. As you can see, Intel re-mapped the scale. So older parts are far more limited. "Balanced" is TU4 and there simply isn't a better target usage level for older Intel parts. You get nothing setting TU1.

The first one. --encopts is a command-line option and doesn't belong in the GUI text box (else it's like you're passing --encopts "--encopts=tu=1" to the CLI)…

The last days i make several tests on haswell platform. The result of tu=1 and tu=2 is the same.
So i think, tu=1 is not working. Can somebody confirm this?

Looks like it worked correctly. I would not expect to see much, if any difference between 1 and 2.

That's only the log for TU1. You need to post the log for TU2 (same source, all other settings equal except TU) so we can compare.
Last time I checked (a few months ago), TU1 did produce different output to TU2, but maybe it's changed since…

Here is log of tu=2. Is identical.
I make a test with q264/Qsvenconder. There i have a different result between tu1 and tu2.
When I verify the results with Handbrake, so tu2 is the same and tu1 of q264/Qsvencoder is a little besser.
So I think Handbrake use alway tu2 and tu1 is not working.

Yep, those encodes have identical output. My guess is that this is because of the ratecontrol method used. Perhaps using average bitrate, or adding force-cqp=1 to the advanced options string would then show differences between TUs 1 and 2?

I may have an idea to the problem... I was also trying to replicate the conditions on my Intel 4600 IGP. Could it possibly be the version of the Intel Media SDK used in Handbrake? I was reading:

and it states they are up to version 5.0. The logs above and my system is showing version 1.11
I come to this conclusion based on the article: http://newsroom.intel.com/servlet/JiveS ... s-4200.pdf Is it possible the Intel Media SDK 1.11 not understand the newer IGP Chipsets OR clumps TU1-TU4 together like the article states with older IGP?
In addition, new features have been added to 5.0 + a new RAW media SDK addon for 4K processing.
I will test on IGP 4600 today passing TU1, TU2, TU5, TU7 and posting my findings... Thank you...

After running numerous test on the same data/same system, I've come to the conclusion the "TU" option is not being passed or defaults to TU1 to QSV. However Best Quality, Balanced, and Fast are but unknown their corresponding TU number. If I was to guess: Best Quality(TU1), Balanced(TU5), Fast(TU6).
