Enough of the numbering scheme users never understand or get right, just call it version 2.3 or something if you don't want to call it 1.0.

Seconded. The 0.10.1 numbering scheme is for open source projects with no aesthetic sense. After 0.99 comes 1.0. HandBrake is WAY more stable and reliable and feature-rich than any paid software I've ever seen. Go for the brass-ring. Go for 1.0.

0.10 allows us to release this year, rather than missing a year. There are a number of things we want to finish off for 1.0 that won't make it into this release. (New API for one)

Any chance of being able to use mp4 container with embedded (not burned in) subtitles while encoding with QSV ?
Right now it seems they are only working when using mkv.
Did I miss something?

PS: I hope my post is approved this time around...
Kind of ridiculous to ban it for providing no log when I'm just asking for what I believe being a new feature...
I did not intend to make any kind of "support" request...

Here is my log, which shows that Handbrake went to burn the subtitles despite not having checked the corresponding box.

Right now it seems they are only working when using mkv.
Did I miss something?

PS: I hope my post is approved this time around...
Kind of ridiculous to ban it for providing no log when I'm just asking for what I believe being a new feature...
I did not intend to make any kind of "support" request...
The MP4 container doesn't support bitmap (including your VOBSUB) subtitles, regardless of encoder.
Previous versions of HB used a hack to stick them in there anyway, but with the change in libraries from mp4v2 to libavformat that's no longer supported.

Based on repeated experience users can't be trusted to describe what they have or what they're doing, so logs are required to unambiguously show both.

Handbrake is using the latest x265 releases? x265 2-pass is enabled in handbrake?

Beta 2 is using x265 1.2 (no 2 pass support)
Beta 3 will use x265 1.3 (with 2pass support working) - No ETA on release. (On a side note, anyone doing 2 pass x265 better have patience :))

I dont want to use x265 for standard encoder, just to make some comparisons with x264.

x265 is actually getting quite good. This is one of the reasons I jumped right into implementing support in handbrake for x265 2-pass ABR. This is really the best mode to use to make meaningful comparisons with other encoders. Hopefully more people will be able to do such comparisons now and will post their results.

I'd hold off til beta 3 (or just grab a nightly) for x265 comparisons. In theory, 1.3 should have better quality than 1.2

Also, you may want to look into compraing x265 with and without psy-rd/psy-rdoq (which has been declared "stable" in 1.3) - can't remember whether it's on or off by default.

Looks like it might be cool enough in a couple of days to get the beast going with some Handbrake love. Is there anything I should look for when I get it going to test 0.10.0 b2? Or should I just treat it as a new nightly?

Also, what version will it show in the log? Is it "svn6361 (Nightly Build) - 64bit Version" for Beta 2?

Frankly, if you've been using nightlies, you might as well stick with them. The Beta release is just to get have an announced build that's tested by more people (i.e. people who don't want to install nightlies).

Ok. Since I can do some transcoding now, I figured I'd try and see if there was much that I could contribute to the testing, but I'll stick with the nightlies.

If you can stress-test the latest nightly, that's just as useful as doing the same for the Beta ;)

When you go to the download page and then want to read about the changes you are sent to this link ( https://trac.handbrake.fr/milestone/HandBrake%20Next ) which then gives you:
Error: Invalid milestone name

Milestone HandBrake Next does not exist.

The NLMeans implemented in HB is the OpenCL version ?
If not there is any plan to implement it in HB ?

Thanks

NLMeans does not use OpenCL. Not sure if there is much desire to implement this. Our OpenCL code, well, doesn't work so well so a lot would need to be fixed first and we don't have anyone with any knowledge of that code working on the project these days. Potentially it could scale quite well on OpenCL though.

There is an OpenCL version that seems to work quite well, more info and source code can be found here: NLMeansCL: GPU based Non Local Means Denoising
while following this link there is also a paper describing a GPU-accelerated real-time NLMeans algorithm: A GPU-accelerated real-time NLMeans algorithm .
