DTS-MA / Dolby HD / LPCM to FLAC

Post by narutoaustx »

My apology if this has already been asked / answered somewhere else. I have not been able to find a clear answer to this question.

And the bits and pieces I have found have got me all confused.

My understanding (could be all wrong at this point):

1) Handbrake can pass through DTS-MA but not decode / encode.
2) Handbrake can decode Dolby TrueHD (?)

I select Dolby True-HD Track and have HB convert it to AC3(ffmpeg) which seems to work. I am assuming that HB is actually Decoding & Encoding. Would Love at TrueHD pass through (HINT :)

My question is "Does HB convert DTS-MA / TrueHD / LPCM to FLAC?" if I chose FLAC(ffmpeg) ?

I Love Lossless track which is lost with TrueHD & LPCM when I convert my HD DVDs & Blu-rays to MKV.

Reason to include DTS-MA is because of File size - I hear FLAC has better compression than DTS-MA / TrueHD.

Yes, HandBrake can decode TrueHD and can also re-encode it to FLAC (or any other available encoder). DTS-HD cannot be converted losslessly to FLAC (when you re-encode, only the lossy core gets processed). Someone is working on DTS-HD Master Audio decoding support for libavcodec, but it's still some way off.

TrueHD passthrough may be in the next version of HandBrake, or will at least be in the version that comes after that.

Thank you Rodeo for answering... :)

Great !! I look forward to seeing TrueHD passthrough - I thought it was there a while back but then disappeared...

Thanks everyone for the Great Work you guys are doing... 8)

Any updates on the DTS-HD Master Audio decoding? I didn't see anything in the Trac change sets.

It's far from complete. If development keeps going, I'd expect support some time in 2016 or 2017.

So, if I encounter a TrueHD audio track and I would like to maintain the best audio quality possible, I should convert to flac until the capability is fully implemented some time in the next few years. Is this correct? Thanks.

(Log below shows an encode that I did with a TrueHD audio track. In this case, I did not convert the audio track to flac.)

Sorry Rodeo. The capability to do TrueHD passthrough. My question is whether I should use flac to maintain the best audio quality possible until that TrueHD passthrough capability is implemented in a few years. Thanks.

Sure, it would work. But it may take years for DTS-HD decoding to arrive, TrueHD passthrough should be here in a matter of months. Definitely 2015.

Thanks again. I appreciate the entire HB effort. I have only used HB for a few weeks now, so I am still learning. Tbh, I am a simple user --- I do not have many DVDs or BDs, so the release schedule does not matter much to me bc HB already does what I need it to do.

I was asking what I should do when I see a TrueHD audio track, and your answer helps me that way. I could also generate an mkv with MakeMKV and extract the TrueHD raw, and then mux it back with the encode from the log above. Anyway, there are options for dealing with TrueHD, so thanks again.

If you pre-rip with MakeMKV, you can mux in the TrueHD audio from the source file into your destination file.

…and if you're using HandBrake for Mac or Linux, TrueHD Passthru is available in the nightly builds.

I have a question on this DTS HD (MA) 7.1
I spent my last days in research but now i'm a little lost and would appreciate some help

My goal is to keep the DTS HD 7.1 audio (for the future, right now i dont have the equiptment) without complicating things but still with the most compatibility for my future sorrund system.

Where i get i a little confused is, when i put my blurays through MakeMkv and choose both the DTS-HD ma 7.1 and the dts 5.1 and load the MKV file on handbrake, it show me DTS-HD MA 5.1. When i choose that track and choose DTS HD passthrough and then open the encoded file in Mediainfo it reads like this

Audio #1
ID : 2
Format : DTS
Format/Info : Digital Theater Systems
Format profile : MA / Core
Mode : 16
Format settings, Endianness : Big
Codec ID : A_DTS
Duration : 1h 59min
Bit rate mode : variabel
Bit rate : Unbekannt / 1 509 Kbps
Channel(s) : 8 Kanäle / 6 Kanäle (
Channel positions : Front: L C R, Side: L R, Back: L R, LFE / Front: L C R, Side: L R, LFE
Sampling rate : 48,0 KHz
Bit depth : 24 bits
Compression mode : / Lossy
Title : Surround
Language : Englisch

According to this, do i have my dts-hd 7.1 like i wanted although handbrake showed just 5.1?
If this is not what i want (dont have to answer if it is), does the ripping with MakeMKV using the dts library file in flac would provide me any solution?

Another question is, if you dont mind my asking:
when i encode the video with (in both, the rest of the settings are the same)
intel quick sync, Preset Quality, RF 17 the video gets as big as 14 GB
without IQS, Preset: very slow, level 4.1, RF 17 the video is just 4,5 GB

Sure the one without IQS takes couple hours more but can i assume they have both the same quality but IQS just produces bigger files because of the speed? Or how should i see this

Thx in advance for your answers

We don't decode DTS-HD, so we only show the channel count for the 5.1 core.

But when passing through we do include all extensions.

Sweet! TrueHD pass-thru now working on Windows, build 7072. Maybe it was earlier but I just upgraded from build 7009.
Thanks guys!

Hello everyone,

I've got a huge problem since I'm not able to passthrough TrueHD (not with the GUI nor the CLI).
No matter what settings I take the TrueHD stream always gets mixed down to AC3 640kb.
I've tried OS X (my preferred OS since my machine there is an i7 quad core) as well as Windows (a crappy old AMD, but I wanted to try Windows as well).

I want to generate an mp4/m4v file.

I just "discovered" that the nightly build is able to Passthru TrueHD (but only to MKV's).
Is it possible (maybe with CLI) to do so creating a mp4/m4v?

Nope. Only MKV supports it.

Nope. Even if we somehow got our hands on the spec for TrueHD in MP4 and created such files, nothing could play them anyway.

I'm pretty sure VLC would play it (or players like popcorn...).
The Reason I want to use mp4 is I like the ability to play the files on my Apple TV as well the ability to play it on my Computer.

Nope, they don't support TrueHD in MP4. Though TBH if we did find a spec. for TrueHD in MP4, we'd share it with VLC devs…

The mp4 registration authority says dolby created a specification ( http://www.mp4ra.org/codecs.html ), but it seems nobody in the open source community has got that spec.

So the only thing "missing" is the specification...

"Damn you Dolby!"
