M4V file sizes seem very large and unpredictable

Post by ericinboston »

Hi all. First, I am not a CODEC or video guru but extremely technical...just to set your expectations.

I'm using Handbrake 0.9.9.5530 on Windows7 and encoding Bluray rips (ripped from DVD Fab HD Decrypter freeware). I'm trying to simply encode them as M4V files that my AppleTV3 will read as well as other devices that I may come across (such as my new WD TV Live). Therefore, I am using the "Normal" preset from the list and letting the file extension be M4V while the "Container" pull-down is automatically set to MP4...I then enable the Large File Size box because I found that without it enabled, M4V files over 4GB do not play.

Now on to my question...the encoding works fine for the devices, but the file sizes not only seem very large (how large is large, right? :) ) but movies of similar time length are much different file sizes.

For example, I encoded Titanic which is 3 hours and 14 minutes and it is 9.6GB...yet Fargo is 1hour 38 minutes and is LARGER at 12.4GB. I am perplexed on how this can be...how can a movie twice as long be 25% SMALLER than another after encoding? I am using the same encoding method/preset ("Normal"). I can't believe that it is audio related. It's possible that there are all sorts of options on the Fargo rip (a ton of languages, closed captioning, etc) but I have no way of disabling those and/or removing those after the DVD Fab rip. Years ago with DVDs I would use DVDShrink to remove the unwanted Languages to save a few megabytes here and there...but I have not found any Windows tool for BR that mimics DVDShrink, sadly. If you know of a tool with a simple GUI I would appreciate the tip.

Personally I don't mind if the compressed/encoded Bluray movies are 5-10GB in size compressed, but something just seems amiss when movie file sizes are just all over the map...and I obviously don't want to waste 3-4GB per movie just because I didn't enable a checkbox somewhere or do 30 seconds of cleanup before the encoding. As a side note, the Fargo bluray folder (ripped by DVD Fab HD Decrypter) is 25GB while Titanic bluray folder is 42.6GB.

Any ideas? Thank you very much in advance!

This log is from my conversion today of Fargo to AppleTV3 (as a test...which took 5+ hours on an i7 machine with 24GB ram...the G drive is an SSD and the source drive is a USB 3.0 that is faster than the C drive's 7200RPM SATA drive believe it or not).

Thanks in advance for the help. If you need another (or older) log, please let me know where I can find it on the drive because I don't see logs in c:\programfilesx64\handbrake.

Re: M4V file sizes seem very large and unpredictable

Post by mduell »

The non-constant relationship between movie length and file size has been explained repeatedly on this forum - if you don't choose to search and read before you post I guess it will have to remain a mystery to you.

Disable decomb and detelecine for better performance - you don't need them for 24fps source material.

Drop the quality a bit (increase the RF a few points) for smaller files; you probably won't see the difference.

Your SSD and RAM are irrelevant for video encoding.

Numerous things can determine the final file size. Duration of the source, unless using constant bit rate, is not one of them.

Type of audio streams, how grainy the image is, and how complex the images are. The more complex and grainy, the bigger the file will be. HD audio streams also will make it bigger.

Fargo is grainy, do I recall correctly?
A weak denoise filter "could" improve times and file size somewhat.

Fargo is extremely grainy. My encoding of that came out at 23GB.

One of the reasons I don't like using RF, for my purposes. Noisy/grainy pictures blow up file size like nothing else.

If you do not mind re-encoding a couple of times, play around with lower quality RF settings and/or run a denoise filter, even the heavy one. You will lose detail, but it might be worth it, and even improve the perceived quality. Personally, I find the grainy treatment very distracting.
