Strange issue in Dark City?
Strange issue in Dark City?
Here's a question for anyone else that's transcoded Dark City...no matter what settings I use (including placebo), at exactly 27:28-27:30 there is some blocky corruption, as you can see in the attached pic. Obviously the encoder is having trouble differentiating between the light and dark patterns but I haven't seen this before and am wondering if it's just due to one particular setting?

Re: Strange issue in Dark City?
Could be due to settings. How about posting a log?

Re: Strange issue in Dark City?
same here,
not sure if x264 is to blame, or the decoding handbrake does...... quite a bad problem though (definitely corruption)
Going to rip the disk again just in case, will do a full bluray rip this time (did a remux before using default settings in my ripper)
if i don't post again though, then assume it didn't help.

Going to rip the disk again just in case, will do a full bluray rip this time (did a remux before using default settings in my ripper)
if i don't post again though, then assume it didn't help.
Re: Strange issue in Dark City?
I'd say it's either a VC-1 decoding bug, or a bug in your playback software.
Impossible to tell without a short sample of the source though.

Re: Strange issue in Dark City?
I have the Dark City BD. The blemish is either in the source or it's a vc-1 decoding bug as Rodeo says. i.e. I can see the same blemish in mplayer and vlc when I play directly from the BD rip.

Re: Strange issue in Dark City?
it's a decoding error, this has come directly from the source after ripping the disk, (full rip didn't help either)
tried 3 different encodes, always same issue, there is some weirdness to the image, but nothing compared to the screenshot that was posted by the OP

Re: Strange issue in Dark City?
I just built the latest libav git to see if the problem still exists since they recently made several VC1 changes. The problem is still there.

Re: Strange issue in Dark City?
ok, thanks for the heads up, at least they have something that seems to be reproducible, hopefully will bring a faster fix to this issue.
the marks on the wall, and around his cheek are definitely of a low quality, if i didn't know any better i would say the VC1 encoding introduced a few errors on these few frames... something about these few frames just doesn't look right.... if not errors then perhaps a low spike in bitrate maybe??? getting ahead of myself now.... think i'll drop out here.

Re: Strange issue in Dark City?
One possibility is that the encoder actually produced invalid data or the reproduction process stepped on a few bits. What we are seeing could potentially be the differences in error concealment behavior between whatever you are using for playback and what libav does.
Re: Strange issue in Dark City?
What's interesting is that if I playback the source ripped straight from disc using eac3to, if I playback using MPC-HC it does not show the corruption BUT VLC or SMPlayer do. Then after encoding the source with placebo settings, all players INCLUDING MPC-HC do show the corruption. Oh well this will be one of those rare movies that I don't transcode, the raw mkv isn't very big anyways
Re: Strange issue in Dark City?
IIRC MPC-HC can use the Microsoft VC-1 decoder.
