output video snapping between "perfect" and blocky

Post by wgf_bean »

OK, I'm not quite sure how to describe what I'm seeing, but here goes...

On some scenes, the output video jumps between being virtually perfect to having blocky sections that were not in the original source. It's as if some threshold is reached and the code decides to change/add a compression mode.

I'm extremely happy with the output of handbrake, except for this one "flaw". If I can determine a way to fix this (like a setting that disables something at the cost of a somewhat higher file size) then I can begin to rip my blu-ray collection.

I've searched the forum/web for a solution (as I'm sure I'm not the first to experience this) but I've had no luck. I'm probably not entering the correct keywords.

Almost all my blu rays seem to do this at some point in the content. Changing from RF 22, to 20 and now to 18 helps but doesn't always/completely stop it from dynamically switching what it's doing. I'm hoping there's a command line switch to disable something that will take care of this.

As an example if you have the series Wild Pacific on blu ray you can see it heavily during the introduction. At 17 seconds in the clouds below the words "Twenty thousand Islands" becomes blocky. At 21 seconds the video snaps to being perfect (all blocks magically disappear at once) even though the scene has barely changed. It happens shortly after the clouds leave the scene. Where the water meets the coastline it changes from blocky to perfect.

I apologize if this has been asked before and I just can't find it.

Here's the activity log of a preview of the series Wild Pacific season 1 episode 1:

1) That's a scan log; we need to see the encode log.

2) What's your playback device?

DVDFab 8.2.2.7. It works fine for me.
mduell wrote:1) That's a scan log; we need to see the encode log.

I playback on my HTPC. It's Win 7-64 bit. I use the integrated video in the i5 processor. The player is VLC. The display device is either a Samsung P2370-HD1 or my Panasonic PT-AE7000U onto a 122 inch screen. I use the Samsung unless we're doing a movie night.

Sorry for posting the scan instead of the encode log file. I just did the 1st 30 seconds as the problem is evident right away. Here it is:

Encode done!
HandBrake has exited.
Since my previous post I also tried something different. I changed to using the advanced tab to disable Deblocking. I set both values to -6.

When I do this the output no longer has the blocking problem! Here's the encode log for this. I'm new at this. If there's a better way to do this please feel free to tell me. Again, only the 1st 30 seconds:

There are many differences in the decode logs besides your "deblock" settings. -6,-6, is not the reason for your observations.
If anything, it would cause more blocking artifacts in the shadows and motion areas.

The second rule of troubleshooting is to change only one thing at a time . . .

Good points. So I ran another test the same as the 2nd (using the advanced tab) but with the Deblocking back to 0,0. So hopefully this is the only change. The visual results are the blocking is back. So could setting it to -6,-6 have indeed fixed my problem? Here's the log:

No, I think your result is an anomaly, but I'll leave it to better heads than mine to decide.

Well this particular anomaly happens in many movies. Every movie that I've done has a problem somewhere and so far this fixes is. The blocking always occurs when there's a large area of one color. Of course it's never really one color because there's slight variations. When the algorithm sees an area like this it decides it's an opportunity to save some bytes by blocking the section - which would be fine if it were indeed one pure color. Unfortunately the result is all too visible. It's especially noticeable in dark scenes, or even very bright scenes. But it doesn't have to be very dark or very light to show the problem. It can happen when there's a sea of one color with minor variations. The minor (but important) variations get squashed and you can see blocking and banding through the affected area.

So far for me any problems I've seen like this are eliminated by setting deblocking to -6,-6.

Note that the source is always a blu ray, and never shows any blocking in its original state.

Perhaps my descriptions above might stir some thoughts for someone to give advice on a better solution. I can't possible be the only one to have seen this.

You're right. Without seeing some screenshots, the "usual" causes of intermittent blocking come from encrypted source, high bitrates or encoding parameters choking the player, other player issues, or more rarely, VP1 source. Your theory and workaround however, are a "first" afaict. Like I said, there are better minds than mine here.

There is an x264 --no-deblock switch you can try as entropy. See the docs.

Have you tried the pre-release version of Handbrake to see if the problem exists there? I'm sure the developers would be interested if they could duplicate the behavior. Sorry that's all I can contribute to the thread at this time.

What happens if you use no-dct-decimate instead?

If use no-dct-decimate=1 instead of deblock=-6,-6 the problem is still there.

If use no-deblock=1 instead of deblock=-6,-6 the problem is gone.

It's quite dramatic. If you have Captain America The First Avenger (2011) you can see it in the opening scene with snow. You only need to encode the 1st 60 seconds. At about 37 seconds the snow starts. You will see the problem there. Using deblock=-6,-6 or no-deblock=1 fixes it.

FYI, for Captain America The First Avenger (2011) the 60 second file size produced by deblock=-6,-6 is 51796 KB, while for no-deblock=1 it's 45405 KB. Audio was set to DTS Passthru.

If you have the series Wild Pacific you can easily see the problem in the 1st 30 seconds opening intro. Using deblock=-6,-6 or no-deblock=1 fixes it. The improvement is amazing.

When I encode the entire movie District 9 (2009) using deblock=-6,-6 the effective file size compression is 5:1 which I'm completely happy with.

What are you using for playback? Can you provide a short sample of the encoded output?

As I posted earlier...

Yes I can provide a short sample of encoded output. Where/how do I post this?

These are 30 second encodes.

Look at the moving cloud under the text "islands" at 00:00:15 - 00:00:20
Also look at the water/shoreline left of "twenty thousand".
At 00:00:10 the video around the "O" and "N" in "ONE OCEAN" is also blocky.

Here's with the default settings WP-default.mkv showing the problems:
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B-6d-Z6 ... sp=sharing

Here's with it fixed (deblock=-6,-6) WP-br5.mkv:

No issues here either, either onboard my laptop or network media server.
Of course, that's a 640x360, 350 Kbps file you gave us, not the 1920x1080 you encoded.

Oh, that little arrow on the left.
Still no issues here, either.

Once again, the OP seems to have used different settings than posted; once again asking us to compare apples with oranges.
Clearly playback issues are suspect, unable to duplicate, thanks.

Definitely see no such thing here with either version of the MKV. Whatever's happening, it's related to your playback setup.

Things that come to mind:

- old version of VLC?

- underpowered hardware (seems unlikely, but maybe if it's an "ultrabook-class" i5, and VLC is using software-only decoding)?

- suboptimal audio/video interleaving (try remuxing HandBrake's output with mkvmerge GUI, see if it makes any difference)?

With these suggestions I found I had shut off hardware acceleration in VLC. Not sure when/why I did that but when I enable it, now the blocking issue is gone.

I will go back and recheck several encodes I did to see if this fixes all the issues I was seeing before.

So basically when I set deblocking to the values I did to "fix" the problem, all I was really doing was reducing the amount of computations required during playback.

Thanks for all your help. I will review everything I've done and hopefully I can start encoding all my blu rays.

I wonder how many others may have this same "problem" without realizing it.
