Article says "HandBrake Release Preview Build - Thursday, May 03, 2012" - Pretty sure this is supposed to say 2013 :)

How does one get a Fedora Build? I'm assuming I need to compile it myself to try it out.

That's currently the only way. Also, make sure to use gcc 4.7 or earlier, gcc 4.8 will generate broken HandBrake builds.

Guess I should have been a little more specific with the how does one build. How do I download the source for RC: 0.9.9?

Make it gcc 4.6 or earlier. 4.7 is also problematic Rodeo.

So you'll probably have to compile GCC and all the associated tools too. I doubt the latest fedora has this.

I was finally catching up on Game of Thrones Season 2 with Plex.

As usual, I preripped with MakeMKV, and I used Subtitle Edit to covert the Dothraki VOBSUB to SRT. I didn't see any issues with the subs until e04.

I can't reproduce this with the provided SRT file - seems to work fine?

Does the following file show any corruption for you? https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/372 ... 29-002.mkv

This is most peculiar. Your sample does not show the subtitle corruption.

Trying a old Mac trick, I downloaded the zip, incase the zip removed any issues (also, SRT is not an allowed attachment. Can that be changed? ) with any invisible characters. That did not help as I still get the trailing "a." on that subtitle.

Re: HandBrake Release Preview Feedback

Post by Smithcraft »

So maybe it is an invisible character in the file, so I downloaded Notepad++ and set it to show everything. Nothing was there, but there wasn't any thing indicating end of file, end of line or anything. So I pressed Enter, and saved it.

Now it is better, in that there is no trailing "a." but it looks like it's making an offset for it, instead of centering that line.

I went back and retried s02e01 and the error on that final sub is "." instead of "a." so for me it looks like something is going on with the final line of a sub without a carriage return/line feed at the end of the sub file.

Hmm, I can reproduce this, finally. Will investigate.

OK, so this should fix the additional space at the end: https://trac.handbrake.fr/changeset/5446

But I can't reproduce the other issue (additional dot or character), so it won't affect that, AFAIK.

First chapter's start time reset to zero. Is this by design?
viewtopic.php?f=10&t=27174&p=124971

Maybe too late to include in this build. Suggestion is to respect initial chapter start time or give option to auto-insert chapter to fill gap between time 0.0 and first chapter's start time (default name = "Chapter 0"?)

Re: HandBrake Release Preview Feedback

Post by brakestands »

Folks, I just switched to the Release Preview build in order to get better handling of PGS subtitles from Bluray rips (as I understand it has some new abilities in this area). DVD's have always been fine, but Bluray with subtitles has been a thorn in my side - until now I hope. So, taking a movie like The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, if I rip the Subtitle track in its entirety to .mkv using MakeMKV (because I like retaining a full unaltered raw rip of the movie itself in .mkv format), and then step two, I use Handbrake against the mkv to get myself a nice High Profile MP4 transcode for AppleTV3 and other uses, what would be the proper Subtitle choices so that I get only the non-English parts subtitled and also have them burned-in for those few portions of the movie? Would I be correct that I would choose the "Foreign Audio Search" option in the dropdown, and then use "Forced Only", "Burned In" and that's it? I'm trying it that way right now, but I figured I'd ask before my 11 hour transcode completes :-) I guess the other option would be to choose the actual full Subtitle track in the dropdown list and then Forced Only and Burned In? Not really sure here.

Thanks as always, so far I love the new version. Wondering if I can run it side by side on my faster Mac Pro while still retaining the old Handbrake 0.9.8 as well?

Yes. Though if it's anything like LOTR Extended on Blu-ray, English forced subtitles are already burned-in (in which Foreign Audio Search will still work, it just won't pick any subtitle track).

Okay, thank you. The Hobbit is complete now, and though I chose the "Foreign Audio Search" and Forced Only and Burned In, I suspect that the subtitles were already burned in as you guessed they would be! The reason I think that is that the subtitles are in a kind of fancy font, very "middle-earth-ish", and not the normal Handbrake simple blocky type font. But now I can venture back into trying to preserve blu-rays like The Godfather and see if when Michael goes to Italy the dialogue includes the subtitles properly. I had held off on most all my Bluray's with any subtitles, because I didn't want to become a PhD in subtitling - lazy I guess on that one, and I frankly had plenty of other movies to work on.

So, question on the release preview I am using now...is there some Subtitle bug that is described above in this thread that should encourage me to take the latest nightly build, instead of relying on the Release Preview candidate build? And specifically, I'm asking in the area of subtitled movies....because I will continue to use 0.9.8 for all other movies that do not require worrying about subtitles. Unless there is some other compelling reason for High Profile encoding to use the new version rather than the old tried and true 0.9.8. Can you comment on this as well? Thank you again for the help Rodeo, your advice in these forums has always been helpful going back many years now!

There is no "HandBrake font". DVD and Blu-ray subtitles are bitmaps (i.e. images), all we do is burn the image on the video (there is no text rendering going on). DVD subtitles are often blocky, but Blu-ray ones usually aren't.

Ahh okay, good to know, thanks for that. Can you comment on my other questions by chance?

I have a bug I experienced in the Ubuntu version of HandBrake and you can reproduce it like this.

If you have a folder with files A.mkv and B.mkv, where A.mkv has five chapters and B.mkv has seven chapters and if you add files A.mkv and B.mkv as part of an "add all of a folder's contents to Handbrake so that all of the .mkv files are selectable in the drop down option" and then "add all to queue" to HandBrake, what you get is a truncated version of B.mkv that's only encoded up to five chapters. All of the files that are added in the queue following A.mkv take on the number of chapters in A.mkv. Thus, B.mkv, C.mkv and so on will only be encoded to a length of five chapters even if they are longer than five chapters in length.

I am not anywhere near my computer to give you encode or activity logs, so you don't have to respond to this bug request. I experienced it a little while back during this latest unstable cycle and it may worked out already, but if it hasn't, it's there.
