OpenCL Nightly Builds

Post by HandBrake »

We now have nightly builds available for the new OpenCL acceleration code within HandBrake thanks to the hard work by the Multicoreware inc team and AMD.

* WARNING *

We've found that hardware decoding support is unreliable and triggering crashes in the graphics driver.
Since this crash is happening in the kernel space, it has the potential to crash your system to the point a reboot is necessary.

We therefor highly recommend that you do not use this on mission critical systems or environments where you could suffer a loss of work due to a spontaneous reboot.

What is accelerated

- Accelerated Crop and Scaling filter. (Performance gains can be seen, only when down-scaling.)
- Hardware Decoding. Note this only works for files that we currently decode via LibAV. DVD, Bluray and Transport Streams do not have hardware decode support.

Builds provided

Windows x86 and x64 Command Line Interface.
Please note that normal nightlies do not include these patches!

How to use it

-P Use OpenCL Cropping and Scaling
-U Use UVD hardware

Download

Feedback

In order for this patch to be committed into the core branch, it needs a lot of testing and feedback. For those of you who decide to try this build, we'd appreciate it if you provide information about what hardware your running and include encode logs for both successful and failing encodes.

If you experience crashing or poor performance, try with -P only, then -U only to localize the crash.

Feedback can be left in this thread.

I'll be happy to test the OpenCL build on AMD A8-3550MX, especially I have results from version 0.98 for to be able track the difference! However please advice how to run the Nightly Builds. I've downloaded the HandBrake-5103svn-x86_64-Win_CLI.zip file and inside I have two folders and HandBrakeCLI.exe. Not sure how to run the program :?:

Thanks, I might will learn those DOS commands and figure out my handbrake pre-settings but I would prefer the easier window way. I actually learned just simply overwrite the staffs inside my Handbrake 0.98 installation folder with the nightly build than run handbrake.exe
It is working, but unfortunately I cannot open my test videofile, says; error, no titles found, your source may be copy protected, badly mastered...etc...

For testing, what do we need to look for, and what should we report?

Also, since cropping is a new part, I would imagine we need something that needs cropping?

@AAT -> I'm adding builds for the GUI. These will be available shortly.

@Smithcraft -> Crashes, Performance increases, decreases etc. Even logs for sucessful encodes are useful to us as it'll allow us to catalog compatible hardware.
Leaving it on auto-crop should be ok, but feel free to try some bonkers numbers.

We are not expecting any large increases at this point as scale/crop and decoding don't take up a large pollution of the cpu time taken. It's pretty small so is more likely to benefit APU's. I haven't actually tested this latest patch myself but the last one was showing in order of a few % difference.
I did see 10~20% increase with the x264 lookahread. This isn't included yet but hopefully will be in the near future.

Looks like UVD still doesn't work on the 64bit build. I'll chase up the status on the fix for that. I was under the impression it was fixed but apparently not as it doesn't work for me either.

You might need to test with the 32bit build for now.

The 32bit version works fine and got my good video file. Although I have not noticed any speed difference with OpenCL turned On or Off;

No OpenCL 32bit Run

Avg FPS:117,3

Re: OpenCL Nightly Builds

Post by s55 »

Been doing some testing myself with the new patches.

Some initial conclusions:
  • It seems downscaling has a sweet point, and if you happen to be in it, there are some modest improvements around the 15% mark.
  • UVD hardware is bottlenecking for my higher end hardware. I'm guessing this will be less of an issue on an APU.
  • Normal conditions are showing either no improvement, or small decrease in performance.
These conclusions are for the following hardware and may vary wildly for others.

Running on a Core i7 860 @ 3.3Ghz and an AMD 7850 2GB with 12.10 drivers.

Are your tests include the x264 lookahead patch already or you run the same version as me?

No lookahead in those results. Just the same nightly.

I made few more run and noticed UVD mode is faster than others;

Nigtly Build SVN5106

32bit Run
Elapsed Time: 9:48
Avg FPS:117,1

OpenCL 32bit Run
Elapsed Time: 9:49
Avg FPS: 116,9

OpenCL+UVD 32bit Run
Elapsed Time: 9:51
Avg FPS: 116,3

UVD 32bit Run
Elapsed Time: 9:27
Avg FPS: 121,5

However the fastest is;
Public Version 0.98 x64
Elapsed Time: 9:08
Avg FPS: 125.7

Old MBP: 2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo. Nvidia 9400 M. Win 7, 310 graphics drivers. 32 bit GUI Handbrake.

1080p Oblivion trailer from Apple to 720p. Audio passthru.

Normal preset:
CPU, 25.16 fps
CL, 14.87 fps
UVDCL, 21.8 fps

x264 'Slow' settings
CPU, 6.4 fps
CL, 5.54 fps
UVDCL, 6.2 fps

During the entire time, I had GPU-Z open, and GPU + Video Engine loads never broke 50% and normally hovers around 10-20%.

I was hoping this would give a bit of a boost to an old laptop, but I guess I'll continue on normally.

Can we have some logs to go with those please.

I'm actually surprised the 9400 even worked with the opencl code as I thought the version it supported was too old.

Encode done!
HandBrake has exited.
Edit: Didn't think to try out an encode with UVD, but not CL enabled, so maybe I will later. The naming scheme is a bit confusing though, as I thought UVD was AMD/ATI-specific?

+ support opencl: 0

Well, that's really weird. It says your card isn't supported, but it's still showing that's it's using the hardware crop/scale.
+ Hardware Acceleration Crop and Scale (1280:534:0:0:0:0)
As for UVD, Yeh I think it is AMD only, however since it's using a DirectX API, the Nvidia alternative might be getting called in.

I'm also thinking that the Hardware Crop/Scale is doing some kind of fallback and that fallback is running slower than our own code.

I'll pass on these notes to the guys working on it and see what they think.

Is this repeatable ?

Re: OpenCL Nightly Builds

Post by JohnAStebbins »

Something is wonky in the unaccelerated version. The logging of the scaling parameters isn't right and makes me wonder if the scaling has been broken somehow in this test code.

Code: Select all

[00:00:11] + filters
[00:00:11] + Framerate Shaper (0:27000000:1126125)
[00:00:11] + frame rate: same as source (around 23.976 fps)
[00:00:11] + Crop and Scale (1280:534:0:0:0:0)
[00:00:11] + source: 1280 * 534, crop (0/0/0/0): 1280 * 534, scale: 1280 * 534
The source *should* be 1920 * 1080. I've tried to reproduce the logging error in current svn code and can't. I think the scaling code is resilient enough to correct itself after this initialization error, but I wonder how this crept in and what else might be busted.

I double checked settings, but didn't notice any difference in performance and GPU/Video Engine load between UVD-only and Both.

Re: OpenCL Nightly Builds

Post by dadw2grls »

Using the 64bit OpenCL build fails for me on Win 7 just opening a file. But the standard 64bit edition works just fine:

OpenCL - I get a KERNELBASE.DLL error when running HB but event viewer shows otherwise:

Re: OpenCL Nightly Builds

Post by Omegazero »

Encoded a Blu-Ray using OpenCL nightly build svn5114 (2012122901) and it encoded fine. It is a movie with IMAX scenes, but it did not properly detect the cropping settings (most of the movie is 1920x800, but the IMAX scenes are 1920x1080). Cropped 140 off the top and bottom, when it should have been 0 0 0 0.
Movie has 18 chapters, and here is a test encode of chapters 15-17.
In particular is the error I get right before the 'Using GPU : Yes' line:

Post by dadw2grls »
