I believe that handbrake crashes when you load a 10-bit video and try to enable UVD acceleration. OpenCL accelerates 10-bit video fine, but when you enable UVD, handbrake crashes.

Thanks for the heads-up. Hi10P isn't supported for hardware decoding yet for GPUs, so we'll disable the GUI for 10-bit videos.

Mac support of OpenCL would be great, plus for it in GUI versions.

It's planned, but I haven't gotten around to making sure it works and wiring it up in the GUI.

I done a testrun again, but now with Dual core AMD A4 Llano APU + Handbrake Build x64 version #105;

1080p to 720p downscale
Regular run: 2:46
OpenCL run: 2:41
UVD run: 2:21
UVD + OpenCL run: 2:02

Finally UVD + OpenCL not slowing each other, good speed bump over regular run ....

Or the Cliff Notes version-
Current nightly - work: average encoding speed for job is 414.745331 fps
OpenCL nightly w/o OpenCL - work: average encoding speed for job is 381.012695 fps
OpenCL nightly with OpenCL - work: average encoding speed for job is 451.636780 fps

Looks like a nice bump over the current nightly. I'm testing a couple of other things with it now, and I'll post the results after the queue has finished which might be in two days!

Change from a whole episode, to just the first chapter and it goes much quicker! I never knew Placebo was sooo slow.

Cliff Notes version for the first chapter of GoT s02e05 -
OpenCL nightly w/o OpenCL - Placebo - work: average encoding speed for job is 2.230764 fps
OpenCL nightly with OpenCL - Placebo - work: average encoding speed for job is 2.172116 fps
Current nightly - Placebo - work: average encoding speed for job is 2.153497 fps

OpenCL nightly w/o OpenCL - Ultra - work: average encoding speed for job is 361.613342 fps
OpenCL nightly with OpenCL - Ultra - work: average encoding speed for job is 399.867706 fps
Current nightly - Ultrafast - work: average encoding speed for job is 356.973663 fps

Of note might be the file sizes. Of course one expects Placebo to have smaller files and it did, but I wasn't expecting them to be half the size of Ultrafast.

Whole episode -
Current nightly - Ultrafast - 822,009 KB (including a 1 KB srt file)
OpenCL nightly - Ultrafast with OpenCL - 823,141 KB
OpenCL nightly - Ultrafast w/o OpenCL - 823,145 KB

First chapter
OpenCL nightly - Placebo w/o OpenCL - 19,945 KB
OpenCL nightly - Placebo with OpenCL - 20,112 KB
OpenCL nightly - Ultrafast w/o OpenCL - 43,488 KB
OpenCL nightly - Ultrafast with OpenCL - 43,496 KB
Current nightly - Placebo - 20,179 KB
Current nightly - Ultrafast - 43,440 KB

- x264 lookahead acceleration if the patch is accepted by x264
Any hope that is gonna happen?

Yes, it's been accepted. We're waiting on x264 refactoring it a bit before integrating.

Any modern AMD or NVIDIA GPU that supports OpenCL 1.2 or later

No Intel support. Thanks

Oh and btw OpenCL 1.2 rules out any Nvidia GPU since Nvidia doesn't support this. Is this patch made by AMD? I have to say well done AMD, mission accomplished. No wonder every other GPU vendor is blocked for marketing reasons, nice.

Actually it should work with OpenCL 1.1 (1.0 is known not to work, however). As for Intel support, we'll see about enabling it when Haswell comes out. I know x264's OpenCL-accelerated lookahead had abysmal performance under Sandy Bridge… not sure what the story is with Ivy Bridge.

Anyway, this is very much a work in progress.

Nvidia current gen cards work, although I'm not sure how good the performance is.
Intel's OpenCL hardware won't be ready for prime time until at least haswell. There much of a question mark around that currently though. Intel's OpenCL hardware being unoptimised is Intel's fault, not AMD's

Actually Intels implementation is better since 15.31. Despite having the slower iGPU Ivy Bridge outperforms Trinity in a couple of OpenCL benchmarks. For a better Luxmark performance AMD users should install Intels CPU OpenCL driver and they get a better performance.

Yeah, I guess it was running on the CPU or something.

My first priority is to make sure the OpenCL scaling works under OS X (not quite there yet). Then I'll see about benchmarking stuff on Intel GPUs and enabling it where it makes sense.

I'll be happy to test the OpenCL build on AMD A8-3550MX

I have a GTX 570, for best results with open cl do i need to install anything other then the nvidia driver and the nightly handbrake? Or is there some opencl driver i need? i'm new to opencl. Not new to handbrake.

I'd hold off using the OpenCL nightly for a bit. There are some problems with the code right now that are hopefully getting patched pretty soon.

Yes, if you have the latest drivers, you should be fine.

Just let us know when it is available again with a link, I can run benchmarks now with AMD Richland A10-5750M and Intel Ivy Bridge + GCN 2.0 Radeon discrete graphics.

There are no updates at this point. Someone from AMD is having a look at trying to cut down all the unnecessary memory copying and improve things and fix hardware acceleration.

One of the problems with the hardware acceleration was it was hooked in in the wrong place, so it caused a lot of breakage we didn't detect until we started testing features like subtitles.
The second issue is the performance improvement was almost non-existent when we switch handbrakes software scaling to use the same algorithm as opencl.

As for the OpenCL x264, that code is in the trunk branch, but disabled by default right now. Hopefully enable that soon so it can be turned on with the "opencl" x264 option. Sadly though in my testing, I really didn't see much, if any improvement and infact really really slowed things down for fast settings.

Hopefully in a few weeks if we get a new patch, it'll turn things around a bit.

All the code is in the nightly builds. Still refactoring work going on though. Currently only works on AMD and Intel, no Nvidia support currently.

Hello Guys, it is been a year when OpenCL project started. Good to see all the codes is in the build now, but curios if it performs as supposed to or still slow?
