NVIDIA GeForce issue?

Post by dmance »

s55: Regarding crashing of the CLI ... and the lack of detection of 'support-opencl' - well it appears to be a NVIDIA GeForce issue. When I switched to an AMD (Radeon HD GTX-5XXX or HD GT 7750) the problem goes away. I tested on Windows 7,8,Server 2008, Server 2012 - all good. I tried the latest GeForce beta (313.96) but the problem still remains. Curiously, all the normal GPU detection and demo-test software (CLBenchmark, GPU-Z) finds and exercises OpenCL with no errors.

@dmance, can you provide a log from the nvidia system. Also, what GPU is it you have ? (Sorry, having trouble keeping track of all the issues in this thread :()

@olli what about if you open a m2ts, mkv, avi, mp4 or something along those lines rather than a bluray directly.

S55: Log from NVIDIA Crash...

Post by dmance »

S55: Log from the crash below: (HandbrakeCLI displays: Encoding task 1 of 1, 0.00% ... then crashes with a windows dialog: HandbrakeCLI has Stopped Working). I am converting MKV (1080p) to MP4 (540p). The option arguments have been pruned down ih the snipped below ... but It does not seem to matter what resolution/settings I choose - same result.

Re: OpenCL Nightly Builds

Post by s55 »

It's hardware decode that's crashing. (On a system like that, you shouldn't use it anyway. It'll be a massive bottleneck. It's really only useful for low end/power cpus)

Incidentally, I've found HWD to be unreliable. I keep getting crashes inside the AMD GFX drivers. Annoyingly though I can reproduce it, MCW guys can't.

I was going over the code, it kind of looks like they've now limited OpenCL support to AMD only. I'm going to query that as I'm not happy about that.

Re: OpenCL Nightly Builds

Further investigation is leading me to think that something is really off here. It says supported = no on an ivy brige laptop I have access to, yet it still creates the kernel binary file successfully. However it fails badly during the encode :/

I wonder if they are testing on non AMD gpus

Yup they are up ... but HWD vanishes :!:
I disabled the subtitle in Options, I load a file, no subtitles get selected and HWD disappears.

as for OpenCL ... 1fps difference on a 5min ts is not impressive :?

Did some tests with SVN 5244 CLI adding the -U to enable UHW and it works.
Did a deinterlace slower and the result is fine with OpenCL bad with UHW

HWD will only work when libavcodec is being used. Your TS files will no longer be using that path so it is correct that the HWD checkbox disappears.

You'll only get an improvement in speed if your actually downscaling. i.e 1080 -> 720p

For closed captions, you have to manually select the tracks you want (or have it automatically include them all. The "Add closed captions when available" perfernce). Your log shows 1 CC track was detected so it'll be available for selection in the subs tab.

The HWD deinterlace problem hasn't been resolved. I've mentioned it to them but they've not got back to me. It's basically gettiong pre-deinterlaced before it even hits HandBrake at the moment.

I've added a warning to the first post in this thread and on the nightly build page.

It seems hardware decode has the potential to cause BSOD / spontaneous reboots and/or crashes inside the graphics driver which it may or may not be able to recover from.

Given my Raid array is currently rebuilding as a result of this, I feel it's necessary to highlight that this can happen :(

Guess what my Raid is rebuilding . .... 10 hours to go

Computer started behaving during the day ... I haven't use HB OpenCL since yesterday ... and voila
it just freeze while using the Nightly ... first time in about 3 months ... :?
so OpenCL is not for me

I would even recommend a power cycle after using OpenCL oups, I meant Hardware AMD acceleration.

The opencl side seems to be ok, but hardware decode triggered it for me. Opencl seems to be better protected against it.

Raid arrays don't like being power cycled much. A safe reboot is better. Just to be clear to everyone in case it's not obvious.

Have a look in the event viewer to see if there is any crash information in there. It may be useful.

I ran into problem when rebooting after system update before.
Until I figure out that I had to wait for restore point to finish !

Last night it just froze, Had to reset, power down, power up, it came back ok.
Nothing much to see except the power faillure in event log.

Yes OpenCL seems ok but no FPS improvement, so it not worth the trouble.

Strange. You were downscaling in the logs a few pages back, so I would have expected to see an improvement although it could just be that opencl just runs too slowly on the 6xxx series GPUs. Either that or you have lucid logic or some other mutli-GPU environment which isn't supported. (Last I saw, the x264 version of the patch disables opencl in those scenarios since driver bugs/problems make it too slow)

24.766872 fps vs 26.192163 fps OpenCL
I7-2600K HD3000 but Lucid Logic software is NOT installed as only 2 applications were supported.

@HandyMan any chance you could upload a sample that trips up the deinterlacing please? I'm gather samples for various problems to send off to them and I don't have one to hand that produces that.

I'm assuming it was the J.E_20130201_19002000.ts one?

Does the problem still exist in that file now that you've cut it? I'm not seeing the problem locally with that file.
Wondering if the file had an interlaced flag and now it doesn't?

Edit: Seems Media Info still says:

Scan type : Interlaced
Scan order : Top Field First

Interlacing is usually stored per-frame and at the video stream level anyway.

The ts source is interlaced, I used to apply Decomb default, but latelay I've been using Deinterlace slower with Nightly, or yadif mode=0 in avisynth.

As for the OpenCL, I haven't done any testing since Febuary 10 when it hang during a recording   and not really planning to do any OpenCL testing on my "only" computer.

No worries. They've re-created that issue atleast. No news on the crashing issues with DXVA. MCW have not been able to reproduce it. I'm having to setup a spare system without anything vital on it so I can test without fear of killing my poor arrays. See if we can't track it down, but if that fails, then it may be that that part of the patch will get dropped.

OpenCL side is moving closer to acceptance though.

Hi, may I know what GPUs and drivers you were using when the crash happened for hardware decoding? We're trying to reproduce it. The build number would be great too.
From what I see from the logs, dmance is using GT640 with driver version 313.96, Handyman is using HD6000 series (exact number unknown) with Catalyst 13.1.

Regarding UVD - I have never seen the UVD crash on GeForce GT640 hardware using the most recent CLI-64 builds. I cycled through a few dozen files for testing. However, i've stopped using UVD because of the occasional (and not predictable) green flashes and skewing of the image in horizontal sections of the output. I cant reproduce this enough to send more info.

Regarding OPENCL - I do keep the "-P" OPENCL option set during my testing and all encodes look okay ... apart from slightly larger output filesize and negligible improvement in encoding time (hmm). I watch GPU-Z during encodes and only see nominal (10-15%) usage of GPU - yet the CPU usage increases disproportionately (I have to think) as well. The OPENCL option definitely uses GPU cycles... but curiously also more CPU cycles! Bus transfer across PCIe shows this not to be a limiting factor.

I have a beefy 24-core Opteron system and I tried experimenting by reducing the processor-affinity for the handbrakeCLI processes to see if the relative GPU benefit would increase. Not so. Even doing encodes with one, four or eight CPUs - I manage to 100% saturate the CPUs while still only seeing ~25% usage of the GPU cores - and performance is CPU bound. So, either the GT640 cores are not fast enough (hard to imagine since they are a fairly new Kepler design) - or the division of workload does not benefit my configuration.

Good news is that pure-CPU encodes of the latest CLI-64 builds are definitely faster than the release 0.98 software. And i suppose the newest (just announced) x264 drop, when integrated, will advance that further.

Got another freeze last night ... but really not related to OpenCL built ... Haven't use it since Feb 10th :|
So the freeze on Feb 10th was probably not related to OpenCl built.

I installed the H.264 Microsoft update http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2670838 February 27th which cause a few display driver hangs after the update.
I guess there will be an Intel and AMD driver release soon
