WD TV, MKV files, and animation

Post by robinsee »

....ive been encoding DVD's very well for quite some time using presets. however BluRays are a hit and miss thing. one thing i have noticed is it seems that animation movies for some reason take quite a bit longer to encode, produce larger files, and are more prone to problems.

..recently ive been trying the regular method of encoding 2 BluRays with no success, causing the WD TV to freeze up while trying to play them. the first encode was done @ RF 22, then 24, then 26. and it continues to freeze up on the exact same place in the movies. (same encoding method for movie 2, still freezing in the same spot).

...are there some settings i should be tweeking other than RF when it comes to encoding BluRay's for WD TV?

....ftr, im using Handbrake 0.9.6, but the same issues existed when i was using 0.9.5

What are you using to decrypt the blurays?

Some people have had success remuxing their files with mkvmerge. Can you try this?

AnyDVD for decryption.

mkvmerge? thanks. ill give it a try.

...so i take it my encodes look clean? im trying to educate myself as much as possible, so what exaclty are people looking (to identify issues) in the activity log? i understand thats a bit of a broad question.

...also, is there any indication as to what or why after encoding mkvmerge is helping? what is mkvmerge doing to remedy the issue?

...thanks a bunch!

I understand thet the WD's require constant not variable bitrate. That could be a clue also.

I don't think it's that. My WDTV plays all of my encodes with VFR.

Do you have the latest firmware update for the WDTV? Could it be some kind of Cinavia protection?

...actually, just so happens there was a firmware update for both Handbrake AND WD TV right after i had issues, updated both and the same problem was there. i thought for sure one of them would remedy what the problem was. updated both and still the same issues...in the exact same spots as before.

This won't be much help, but I wanted to echo that I've also had some issues with HB and one of my WD players, in terms of blu-ray encodes "freezing up". This never happened with previous HB versions so I'm pretty sure it's something with the new HB. (Note: I've been using WD players and Handbrake for several years now with no issues and I'm fairly experienced at this sort of thing). I've also used fixed rates with no better luck.

I'm off to try remuxing with mkvmerge just in case that solves the issue (although I'm rather skeptical about why this would have *anything* to do with helping -- HB used to be the gold standard when it came to making MKV files that played nice with WD players).

This was posted by rodeo in the thread I linked to:

'We made modifications to the MKV muxer that should improve streaming, but maybe they're adversely affecting streaming to your particular device.

Does remuxing the file with mkvmerge GUI help? '

The remuxing seemed to work in that case.

...well, mkvmerge worked like a charm.

...2 Bluray movies encoded @ 22 and 24 with all 4 freezing up. remuxed all 4, 3 played fine, with one now having an audio sync issue but plays through no problem.

...i figure the audio sync issue can be fixed easily once i do a little research on it.

...thanks all!

 (sorry)

I suppose you mean constant framerate - it's definitely required if you use the MP4 container, otherwise you may experience stuttering and/or AV desync. All my VFR encodes (MKV containter) work fine on my WD TV Live HD Media Player, though.

We could also help - the encode Activity Log would be a good start though.

Okay, remuxing did work, which tells me the HB muxer is broken. I'll visit that thread and let Rodeo know.

Oops. cross posted. I see Rodeo is already on this thread and knows.

So, just to confirm, HB is broken insofar as playback with WD players are concerned (at least when encoding MKV files from blu-ray). Remuxing with mkvmerge (and I suspect almost any version -- I'm still using a two year old one) fixes it, which is a bit of a PITA (since a remux for me took about 90 minutes).

For one movie? It never takes me more than 10, maybe 12 minutes, even when HandBrake's output is large (10-15 GB). You might want to try a more recent version.

Well, I *was* remuxing off an NAS (which isn't the fastest across the network, but it's where all my movies are).

But I do assume you guys are at least considering putting HB muxer back the way it was (unimproving it, as it were :>).
