Encoding hints for tv-series

Post by oRBIT2002 »

I've been trying to rip my MacGyver collection from DVD to MKV, but with poor results. I am not sure what I'm doing wrong. The results gets choppy and "unsmooth". The DVD's are in PAL format. I've tried using deinterlacing/decomb (not sure what it do, but I've tried it anyway), but the output is still not as good as the original. The problem is mostly visible during horizontal camera movements. I am not talking about inproper deinterlacing stripes/artifacts, it's something else...
I've ripped alot of other movies/tv-series but never experienced these kind of strange problems.
Any hints where I should start looking? Could it be interlacing related? I guess the encoded file ends up being progressive (source is interlaced), could this result in strange looking camera-movement?

Where's your encode log?

It could simply be that the source was badly transferred to the DVD. I know some TV Series have that problem, and there's little that can be done to fix it.

Sounds like a framerate problem. What are choice are you using for framerate? If the source is variable framerate and you choose a constant 29.97, you will often get choppy video during camera pans like you described. Try forcing 23.97. You may have never run into that problem before because your previous dvds may have had a constant framerate to begin with. btw...I suggest always using decomb instead of deinterlace as it accomplishes the same thing but in a better way.

Here's the encodelog below. It's a PAL DVD if it matters.

Re: Encoding hints for tv-series

Post by JackNF »

Most shows and movies transferred from film to PAL get sped up (~24fps->25fps) and result in no interlacing. That you're having interlacing problems at all point towards a shoddy NTSC->PAL video transfer of some sort. I ran into similar problems when I was ripping my old PAL Robocop: The Series DVDs a year or two back. Best results I ever got out of Handbrake was to just run the deinterlacing filter (not the decomb filter). There's a reason I re-bought that series last year when NTSC DVDs were finally release...

There is a more advanced type of deinterlacing (bob-deinterlacing as opposed to blend-deinterlacing) which might give you better results, but 1) I can't think of anything that has that feature that's as easy to use as Handbrake, and 2) because of the way it works your output file will actually run at twice the framerate of your source (25fps becomes 50fps) so with twice the frames to encode the output files are much, much bigger. Plus, AFAIK most anything other than a PC will choke at trying to play a video with such a high framerate. Still, if you happen to be aiming for PC playback that might be something to look into.

The original DVD doesn't show any of these problems when played on my DVD/VLC, but only my encoded file.

Both your player (or presumably, your TV) and VLC have more deinterlacing options than HandBrake. HandBrake's motion adaptive deinterlacing can sometimes result in jerky video.

One developer is working on bob deinterlacing (which doubles the framerate and therefore preserves temporal resolution as well), but he's very busy at the moment so there's no ETA at all.

Is there a way to encode the material as interlaced in Handbrake? (probably not?)

tff=1 (advanced panel) and disasbling detelecine/decomb/deinterlace may work; however, HandBrake is not designed for it, so you'll likely get suboptimal results.

My iPhone4 refuses to play files encoded with "tff=1" sadly..

I've uploaded a file for anyone to check out. Especially check out the mountain in the foreground moving at about 00:10 into the clip. It's jerky. It's encoded as 25FPS (PAL DVD) and decomb default (to get rid of interlacing stripes). Maybe this helps anyone in detecting what the problem is..

EDIT: Just noticed that this issue only seems to appear on the first episode, not the others. Strange stuff.
