no anamorphic blu rays? (encode 1080p anamorphic?)

Hi All,

Someone mentioned that there is no such thing as anamorphic blu rays, is that correct?

If so, does the blu ray spec allow for it in the future? Kinda like when 'widescreen' DVD's started coming out a few years after the non-anamorphic ones.

The reason I ask is that I've started doing my 720p encodes as anamorphic (from 1080p source), and was wondering if there was a way to do the same for 1080p assuming that my source (blu ray) are anamorphic to begin with.

Anamorphic just means the pixel aspect ratio is not 1:1. The BD spec says the pixel aspect will be 1:1. HandBrake's anamorphic mode just tries to pass the original aspect ratio of the source through to the output as closely as possible. Therefore, if the input aspect is 1:1 (non-anamorphic), HandBrake's anamorphic mode is going to use 1:1.

You always want to use anamorphic mode unless your player does not support it. There are few players these days that do not support it.

I think I've got my settings correct for what I want to do, which is convert 1080p/2.35:1 to 720p 2.35:1, using the full height of the frame, instead of my old way, which was 1280x544. I am a little concerned about the double-resize (1280->1680 -> 1920) on playback, but the image does seem nicer.

Does this look right?

That's basically what I do, except I use mod2.

Some players require that the video dimensions be a multiple of some power-of-2 value. 16 is the default because it works with pretty much every player that has such a limitation. If your player doesn't have this limitation, and you don't think you will ever need to play your files on such a limited player, then change mod to 2.

followup:

As a quick test, I put a handbrake 1280x800/2.35:1 .mkv preview on a USB stick, and plugged it into my blu ray player (Insignia BRdvd4-ca). Unfortunately, it didn't respect the aspect ratio, and expanded the image into the full 1920 x 1080, full frame, so I ended up with an image too tall and narrow. I thought it was because the ratio wasn't included in the mkv, so I ran the same .mkv through mkvMerge, and set the ratio to 2.35:1, but same result on playback, wrong ratio.

I think I'll stick to 1080p from now on. Thanks all.
