Encoded video longer than original

Post by Deleted User 23485 »

I have been testing some ripped standard-def DVDs using HandBrake 9.5, MKV container, high profile. Each of the DVDs contained a movie around 2 hours in length when played using VLC. The encoded MKV movies are between 7 and 9 seconds longer than the original, when played back using VLC. Why is the encoded video longer than the original? I have tried setting the Framerate option to "Same as source" and also "23.976", which gave the same results of the MKV video being longer than the original. The number of frames in a movie is a fixed number, so is Handbrake actually adding more frames to the movie?

You shouldn't need detelecine or decomb on most Blu-ray sources.

How are you determining that one is longer than the other? Using a stopwatch isn't a valid method because it doesn't isolate whether the player or the encoder is at fault. Looking at a time code printed by the player would have the same problem. The only real way to tell would be to look at the first and last timestamp in the output file and compute the difference. Then do the same for the input file (except that dvd's don't have monotonically increasing timestamps, so all you can really do there is trust the information read from the dvd).

When I play the ripped movie VLC in the lower right corner reports the movie is 2:04:30 long. When I play the Handbrake generated H.264 encoded MKV file VLC reports the movie is 2:04:37 long, 7 seconds longer. Using the MPC-HC player also displays the 7 second difference. So are you telling me the video players I use do not accurately show the correct length of a movie? So I shouldn't worry about the time difference? And Handbrake is not adding frames to the movie?

HandBrake doesn't do that, unless of course you choose an output framerate higher than that of the source. But it still shouldn't change the duration.

What does MediaInfo say about the duration of the file?

[17:04:23] mpeg2 done: 179288 frames
It appears the nominal duration of the source is 02:40:30, which HandBrake estimates represents 179128 frames. But after the actual decoding, HandBrake finds 179288 frames, which is 160 more than expected.

160 frames at 23.976 fps is about 7 seconds (6.67 s). One possibility is that the source is slightly longer than reported in the IFO file (which is presumably where VLC looks for the duration of the DVD too).

Another possibility is that the framerate is actually a bit higher than 23.976 fps, but VLC calculates the length of the MKV file by dividing the number of frames by the nominal (as opposed to average) framerate and gets the estimated duration wrong. Shouldn't be a problem on playback though, i.e. VLC should still play the movie at the right speed.

P.S. I'm still interested in what MediaInfo says about the file.

MediaInfo says the MKV file is 2h 4mn long. It seems MediaInfo doesn't display seconds when the video is over an hour.

So Handbrake found more frames than what the DVD listed in its IFO file. Is this a common occurrence for standard def DVDs? I'm new to Handbrake and found the time difference in all three movies I have tried so far.

Don't look at the "Play Time" field. Instead, check the Video Stream Length and Audio Stream Length.

OK, had to use MediaInfo Debug|Advanced mode, which showed the video being 02:04:37.769 long and the audio being 02:04:37.775 long. But I don't see how that helps me in understanding the time difference between the original DVD source and the encoded MKV file. It appears nobody think its of any concern, which is fine by me.

OK then. IIRC MediaInfo will look at the timestamps, in which case your file is 179288 frames, 2:04:37.769 at 23.976 fps.

I'm pretty sure there's nothing to worry about - while it seems odd that the IFO file contains an incorrect duration for the title, it does sound like that's where the actual issue is.

While we're checking things, how many frames does MediaInfo say there are (for the video stream)?

MediaInfo lists the Framecount = 179287, which is one frame less than what Handbrake listed in the activity log, go figure.

2:04:37.769 -> 7477.769 and 7477.769 * 23.976 = 179286.98 ~= 179287

Now, there are actually 179288 frames in the file (HandBrake knows the exact number of frames it muxes to the output file). This tells us that MediaInfo is deriving the number of frames from the timestamps, rather than deriving the timestamps from the number of frames (confirming that it got the exact duration of the video stream, rather than an estimate).

Edit: Oh, and that also means the DVD isn't exactly 23.976 fps; this isn't surprising, as DVDs have variable framerate (although most of the time the framerate will remain very close to the nominal framerate).
