MediaFork 0.8.0 Public Beta 1 -- Released!

Post by jbrjake »

Old open source projects never die, they just get new names.

We’re proud to announce the first public beta of MediaFork!

Download MediaFork 0.8.0 Beta 1:

* Mac OS X (Universal Binary)
* Linux (CLI)
* Windows (CLI)
* Source (svn revision 298)

We’re all very excited to get an application out there for the community to stress-test. It is a beta, and we can’t guarantee any particular level of functionality or stability, but we think you’ll enjoy it. Highlights include full 640*480 iPod video, anamorphic encoding, and newer, faster copies of x264 and ffmpeg.

Please continue to use our forums to report bugs, suggest features, ask questions, or join development. We are also available on IRC.

MediaFork is a GPL’d, multiplatform, multithreaded DVD to MPEG-4 ripper/converter, available for Mac OS X, Linux, and Windows. It is based on the source code to HandBrake, written by Eric Petit and Laurent Aimar.

New in this release:

* Updated libraries (meaning better quality, hopefully fewer bugs, and increased speeds)
* iPod 5.5G support
* Revamped graphical interface (Mac OS X)
* Anamorphic encoding with pixel aspect ratio
* Brighter color reproduction in QuickTime
* Lists disks by DVD name instead of by drive name (Mac OS X)
* Titles output movies based on the DVD name (Mac OS X)
* 32Khz audio output
* Constant rate factor encoding with x264
* New preference item to turn deinterlacing on by default (Mac OS X)
* New preference item to select the default audio language (Mac OS X)

Fixed:

* Reading straight from a DVD (broken in our earlier alpha)

Broken:

* Encoding multiple audio tracks
* Auto update (please ignore this for beta 1)

To do:

* Instant MediaFork (or equivalent functionality) release
* Automatic update functionality

For a complete list of changes, visit our Trac timeline.

Please stay tuned to this forum, especially graphic designers. We will soon be holding a contest to choose a new icon for MediaFork (Mac OS X and Windows). Prizes will include: a sense of pride in a job well-done, artistic immortality, and a warm feeling of self-satisfaction.

Thanks for your interest in MediaFork! We hope you enjoy it!

Just as an FYI - The Mac *.dmg dl's as a bz2 file. You have to remove the bz2 ext. and the dmg will open. Not sure why it appends *.bz2?

What browser are you using? I just downloaded and mounted the image fine with Safari, no .bz2 extension.

Using Safari. Tried a reboot; still comes as bz2. Uninstalled The UnArchiver (thought that may have something to do with it); still bz2. Not sure what is going on.

On a positive note, I re-encoded The Illusionist last night using my usual settings from HB (with the exception of using PAR). The file is smaller and the show looks better! Great job people!

*****UPDATE*****
As of 9:30am EST the download no longer comes down as a bz2. Not sure if a change was made ; I know I didn't do anything. Glad it works now!

It also came down as a .bz2 file for me, but renaming it to .dmg seemed to do the trick.

The .dmg->.bz2 problem should be corrected. Please let me know ASAP if it isn't. (We only really need one person to test this who could consistently reproduce the problem before now to respond to this and tell us if it's OK.)

OSX Image Corrupt?

Post by alex.shultz »

I have tried downloading the OSX Image a couple of times since the post about fixing the bz2 problem. It downloads with Firefox 2 as a 12.7MB file instead of the 13.3MB file that the link say it should be. OSX also gives me a message that the image fails to mount and that the reason is "corrupt image".

It should have read 12.7MB - I will correct. It sounds like you're getting the whole file - I'm not sure why you are getting a corruption message. I've confirmed the MIME type is coming through correctly and haven't received a problem report (except for yours) since the change. Can you try from another machine?

I'm seeing the same problem when I download it in other ways.

So far:
  • OSX 10.3.9
    • Firefox 2
      Safari 1.3.2
    XP on a Dell Laptop
    • IE7 and then transferred it to the Mac.
It comes out the same size (12.7MB) and gives the same message about corruption.

The only thing I can guess - and that's all it is - is that you're somehow still getting the .bz2 extension. Does it show up at the end of the filename? If not, it should work fine - we've had a little over 10,000 downloads in the last two days and only one report of download corruption.

I'd also normally suggest you clear your browser cache and download again, but if you're getting this from two different browsers on two different systems, that isn't likely to be the issue.

Corrupt Image?!

Post by Muir »

I have the same problem as alex.shultz reported.

I too have downloaded (safari 1.3 and firefox 2.0.0.1) this file several times with no luck. The disk image appears on my desktop as "MediaFork-0.8.0b1-MacOS_UB.dmg" however, I receive the following message in a warning window: The following disk images failed to mount. Then it lists the image name and reason, Image (MediaFork-0.8.0b1-MacOS_UB.dmg) Reason (corrupt image).

Could this be that it is not PPC OS X (10.3.9) compatible as stated on the download page?

I was really looking forward to trying this app after reading about it on tuaw.com. Needless to say this is disappointing and frustrating. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Can someone confirm OSX 10.3.9 support?

Post by kldaberkow »

It is my belief as well that this is an OSX 10.3.9 issue. :( Can anyone confirm that they have successfully downloaded and installed this application while running 10.3.9?

No, it's just broken

Post by Chairface »

It's not a 10.3 problem. I'm running 10.4.8 on an intel macbook and the image is corrupt for me as well. The unix "file" command says the dmg file is actually a bzip2 file. However, bzip2 fails to decompress the file.

The file I have is 13348440 bytes long. md5sum shows:

622c107ce6aa388f5981f8d77a1c54a1 MediaFork-0.8.0b1-MacOS_UB.dmg

This was downloaded in firefox. A download from Safari also failed to work and is the same size but has a different md5:

8db6d5462a26706cc90544aea693af1a MediaFork-0-1.8.0b1-MacOS_UB.dmg

Ok that's really weird

Post by Chairface »

I ran a few more tests. I download the dmg via wget and got yet a third different md5 sum. So I downloaded a second copy via wget and got a fourth md5 sum. It looks like the file is changing on each download, though the download is always the same size.

Is it possible you have an automatic content compressor or some other sort of other mutator that you don't know about?

I'll also throw in this odd observation:

Code: Select all

$ cmp MediaFork-0.8.0b1-MacOS_UB.dmg*
MediaFork-0.8.0b1-MacOS_UB.dmg MediaFork-0.8.0b1-MacOS_UB.dmg.1 differ: char 291128, line 1152
So the change is happening pretty deep in the stream. I wouldn't be surprised to see some change in the start or end of the data but 290K in is strange. I fetched a 3rd one and the first change was past 1M. Here's a verbose cmp output from the first two fetches:

Code: Select all

  291128 110 150
 3095968 367 327
 3720064 226 266
 4210824 126 166
 5496496 250 210
 6153768 262 222
 7209704  66  26
 7548208 241 201
10051808  44   4
The first column is the address, the second and third are the byte values in the two files. Similar diffs with files 2 and 3 show a different selection of changed bytes.

The only plausible explanation I have at this time is that your router/whatever is front-ending your connection has a MTU setting that differs from the "Internet standard" and is causing lossy packet fragmentation. This will only show up on certain sites (that will not vary MTU to match yours) and is a somewhat rare situation (that is usually easily corrected by the user).

That being a possibility, it's my intention to move the downloads to m0k this week anyway, so before I have you making low-level changes to your network, give me a few days to make the transition and let's see if it improves anything for you.

I have no freakin' idea.

Post by Chairface »

I don't think so. Any lost fragments would have resulted in a failed tcp connection. The same would also be true of all my connections and my internet connection here is very solid. As a test, I also cranked down my router's WAN side MTU to its minimum of 616 (from the standard 1500) and ran the test again and still got corrupted files. Don't forget, other people are having problems downloading and some others are not.

It almost has to be some intermediate router but what exactly it's doing I can't imagine. It's not exactly easy to royally screw up a TCP stream and somehow leave all the per packet checksums and total stream length correct.

I honestly don't have any idea what's wrong but it's a neat problem. I've never seen anything like it so I'm going to do some more poking around.

I'd encourage that, merely out of scientific interest. :)

In reality, we crossed the 30,000 download mark for the Mac OS X version some number of days ago, and the total number of complaints noted about download corruption from all sources we monitor is about 15. So the count of "some others" is statistically staggeringly high. ;)

corrupt DMG fix

Post by tomand »

seeing as it's been some time since the 10.3.9 corrupt DMG bug has been reported, I decided to track down a 10.4 machine with which to make a functioning disk image.

hooray for the GPL!

all 10.3.9 users may now find working disk images (and a ZIP version) here:

http://www.reed.edu/~tomand/mediafork/M ... -fixed.dmg (14.2 MB)
http://www.reed.edu/~tomand/mediafork/M ... -fixed.zip (12.7 MB)

no additions, deletions, or changes were made to the contents therein, just dragged-and-dropped to a new empty disk image. not too hard.

might I suggest to the developers that the next version be distributed in ZIP format, like HandBrake used to be?
on my machine the ZIP file came out 1.5 megabytes smaller than the DMG anyway.

many thanks to the new developers! a sample transcode was almost an hour faster on my G4.
although I wish support for multiple audio tracks had not been removed... maybe next version? or maybe I was doing something wrong.

cheers-
danny

(ps: could anyone willing to host these files kindly set up a mirror? I'm not sure how long I can keep them posted.)
