CRF providing high bit rate

I'll give this one more try, since my first post was disapproved.

So I'll just simplify my question. When I run a video that is 45 min long, process with CRF in 60.78% and AC3 audio, the first attempt, which I only encode the first min. or so, has a bitrate of 2526 kbps, and without closing the program, I run the same file, same settings, and the encoded file becomes 2528 kbps. I finally run another process of the same file, same settings, but actually restart the program first, and the third attempt is a file with 2407 kbps. Why are the files encoding in different bitrates???

Is your gripe the high bitrate (per the title) or the variable bitrate (per the prose)?

High bitrate: The video bitrate is in the normal range for DVD encodes at RF 20.

Variable bitrate: You're getting different average video bitrates because you're stopping the encodes at slightly different times.

I see your point. But it still doesn't make too much sense. I did another trial on a different video, of about 45 minutes in length. I did, once again, only encode one minute, but the three attempts showed three different bit-rates, averaging between 4000 to 4500 kbps.

So, as for my gripe, I'm just confused as to what would drive Handbrake to encode at such a varying bit-rate. I'm encoding the same source, and not a different file. I would suppose Handbrake always chooses a good quality, and I assume i should be the same in all attempts, but as explained, it doesn't seem that way.

Another issue is that I ran a 2:12 hour movie in the same quality, 60.78% on CRF. The movie, for a reason I don't understand, encoded at ~1500 kbps. Why a drop in bit-rate?

So maybe I'm not too familiar with Handbrakes internal structure, apparently, but I figured that each attempt, whether cancelled or not, should have encoded in a similar bit-rate. Anyways, before I start talking nonsense, I just wanted to know if there was something in particular that could affect the bit-rate Handbrake selects. Could it be color, picture size, original quality or bit-rate of the source, etc????

If you would like to know exactly what I was encoding let me know. Not too sure if it is appropriate to share here, but I figure the source could play a big role in Handbrake's selection of a bit-rate.
Anyways, would greatly appreciate any help. (And forgive a brother for not being too knowledgeable with all this stuff!!!)

The difference between your first and second encodes is minimal... 6 frames and a little over 1 Kbps. Your third encode is nearly 7 seconds longer and the discrepancy may be due to a fade to black after the opening titles... who knows? The important thing is that such variation is not only normal, it is expected.

It may be difficult to get your head around, especially if you're accustomed to ABR encoding, but CRF encoding targets a quality metric and thus is subject to many variables: frame size (post cropping), film grain, the quality of the print and the quality of the DVD transfer to name a few.

If you were to use a stream editor to cut a sample clip of EXACTLY 1 minute then ran 3 passes on it, I would wager the variation in video bitrate would be well under 1 Kbps across the 3 encodes.

x264 is deterministic. If you encode a whole clip (no canceling) multiple times with the exact same settings (and the same version of HB and x264, of course), you'll get the exact same video bitrate.

Well, after so much investigation on what settings are best for me to stay on, I concluded I would use MP4 as my video container, and x264 for the codec. I am not changing those settings. But now, it seems like I can never be satisfied with either ABR or CRF. Everyone on the forum seems to have a contrasting opinion of which is best. I don't care about the minuscule details, and frankly I can settle for never having the exact quality as the original source. I notice stuff like that but family doesn't so what the heck??? But then what would be advisable?? People say CRF and then 2-pass encoding. Others say simply using 2-pass with a high bit-rate. Then others say there is no difference between 2-pass and CRF. So...what then??? You're really not getting how CRF works. You tell handbrake (or more specifically, x264) what quality you want to encode the video to and it'll use the bits necessary to make that happen. If you have two different video clips and one is 1500kbps and the other is 2500kbps all that means is that the former was less complex to encode and so handbrake didn't have to use more bits. This is a good thing. If you did ABR at 2500kbps then you'd essentially be wasting disk space encoding videos with a higher bitrate than necessary.

As was said above, CRF and be done with it. Varying bitrates is a a good thing and is expected behavior.

In the same way that ABR will dish out more bits to complex parts of your movie and scrimp on the parts that don't have any detail, CRF kinda does that too, but instead of across one video, it does it across the entire video library. If you have a movie with lots of action, or noise, it'll have a higher bitrate; while a cartoon, which often involves a lot less movement and changing of colours, will have a much lower one.

I have no evidence for this, but I get the feeling that CRF 20 for DVDs will give your iTunes library an "average bitrate" of 1500kbps, the same as iTunes. I have some things at 2500kbps in my library, and others as low as 500.

And CRF is quicker than ABR.

The only time I can think to use ABR is if you want to fit a movie on a CD exactly.

Well, in that case you would use Target Size to fit on a given media for instance, hb will calculate the audio and video bitrates required based on the source length in time to achieve that physical file size. Imho Target Size is the worst way to encode video.

Of course they aren't. I was merely illustrating a device which does have a known abr limitation in which case using crf is at best risky.

AppleTV also has limits. Not sure exactly what they are, but I've encoded a BD to 720p at a bit rate of 4500. Artifacts and studdering permeated the entire film because (I assume) either the bandwith from my PC to the ATV was too slow, or the ATV couldnt process the information fast enough. That was a result of encoding at CRF (I think around 60). Re-encoding at ABR 1500 yeilded a great picture at a much lower file size (1.6 GB with 1500 ABR vs 4.5 GB using CRF of ~60 for 1:45 of HD video).

I am a fan of using ABR, and haven't had a bad result. But reading these comments is making me reconsider.

Is this true? I should only use CRF of 22 for Blu-ray? Is this rate dependent on the resolution I require?

I used to use ABR 2-pass H.264 for my movies. Then when v0.9.4 came out and Handbrake's homepage had this big spill about Constant Quality (CRF). So I decided to do a test run of it. So I took a movie that was previously done in ABR (1500 kbps (all my movies were done in this w/ 2-pass)) and did it w/ CRF 20. WOW! I was blown away! Not only was there a NOTICABLE difference in picture quality, but the movie itself was almost 500 MB smaller (1.2 GB vs 1.6 GB). So I did another test w/ a different movie with similar results! For almost all of my movies (98%+) the same results hold true. Only a handful of movies used more space using CRF than ABR. And yes, I re-encoded all my movies, still am actually, w/ these new settings. With these new settings, I am estimating on the server I built, I can put over 2,000 movies on it vs 1,500 movies. That's 400 MORE movies!!!!! And they take up 25 - 33% less hard drive space!!!!!

So believe me when I say this, and I say this with experience under my belt, I AM SOLD ON CRF!!!!!
